which bike for first trip?

Planning a little introduction to touring for myself - a 3 day ride from Brussels back home on North Essex/Suffolk boarder via Harwich.
Not planning on camping, but will need a bit of kit.
Do I take the Giant OCR1 with a big saddle bag and bar bag. or
Old rigid mountain bike which has a rack & option of panniers/rack-top bag etc and get it some slickish touring tyres?
Will I loose alot of speed on the 26'' wheeler?

do you want comfort or speed?
MTB gearing and good legs can be almost as fast as a loaded road bike.
