I have pain in the my knee (in varying places i.e. not all the time) and in my lower back. Climbing the stairs is painful. I have suspected that this is because my bike is too big?

Could be, though hard to say. Back pain could be stem too low. Intermittent knee pain is harder to diagnose, though could be a reaction to your back problems (some knee injuries are 'referred' pain from other parts of the body).

Get yourself fitted by someone in the know first off - if you know the bike position is right then you can discount that. Thereafter, seek advice off a local physio/chiropractor - ask the local bike club who they'd recommend from personal experience.
