Tyre Choice
Hi folks
My commute is currently on the road but will soon be changing to a mixture of (mostly) canal towpath, with some road and some muddy wet off-road, well its fairly dry at the moment but mostly its wet.
So I'm loooking for your recommendations for a nice fast 26" tyre that can do mostly towpaths and roads but can still give me some grip, or at least not be useless, in the claggy stuff when needed. This might be too much for one tyre, but your suggestions would be much appreciated.
thanks
Laurence

Schwalbe Cx Pro (a cyclo cross tyre that will fit an MTB rim) or Continental cross country (1.5) will both cope alright with mud, but still be quite fast on the road.0

I would personally just go for a proper chunky knobbly off road tyre and forget going like the wind on tarmac. You may be thankful one day when you are up to your arse in filth.

The best all-round tyre that i've used it the panaracer fire xc in 1.8. rolls fast, grips ok off road and sheds mud fast. needs to be pumped up quite hard to work effectively on the road.
I wouldn't use the conti cross country on the road. I have done, it felt like bambi on ice, they're too narrow, and the tyre carcass rolls all over the place. good on mud, crap on the road.
All IMHO

Thanks for the feedback - don't like the sound of the Contis based on Steve's comments - would the Schwalbe be any better? Looks like I might go for a lightweight off-road type like a Racing Ralph or the Panaracer Mach SS and perhaps change up to something more knobbly like the Fires once the wetter weather comes....

i think i may have found the holy grail! Bought some spesh HOUFFALIZE and been using them a fair bit over the winter. Supposed to be a winter tyre but working well on bridleways and the road yesterday.
never going to be as good as a specific tyre for all surfaces but not bad
The ralphs will be ok. thing is with wider tyres with more knobbles is they drag a lot on the road, making it harder work

I have Panracer Fire XC's on my mtb which I currently use for mixed terrain, off road being mostly hardpacked forestry paths and the like, and hate them on the road (they squirm on cornering, compress under braking and ride like you're riding through treacle). I wish there was something equivalent to a 700c cyclocross tyre for 26" wheels, but if there is I haven't seen it. I'd want something 1.5" or less, with a high psi rating for road use.0
