is illegal, why do motorists think that driving backwards along a one-way street the wrong way is OK?

I live on a one-way street, and I like to sit in the window and watch the world go by, drinking tea while the cat relaxes on the flat roof overlooking the road. Now I've seen the backwards thing a fair few times. But the forwards thing is pretty common too.
• i like placing cardboard boxes behind cars that are reversing down one way streets, empty ones, but it gives them a scare.

i also poke badgers with spoons and flick peanuts at old ladies

i had the pleasure of encountering someone reversing up the slip road onto the m42 this morning (not on my bike)... which was a little unexpected as i was trying to accelerate to 70 at the time.

takes all sorts.

It is because they are pointing the other way. This gives the illusion of not breaking the law. As Freddie Mercury once said - It's a kind of Magic.

On a related subject it's quite suprising the number of pedestrians I see stepping off the kerb in to the path of a cyclist traveling at speed the wrong way up a one-way street.

The ped. may be slightly to blame for not looking in the opposite direction, but I wonder if there are similar "safety" arguments for the cyclist that make this practice as acceptable as RLJ.

Cycling the wrong way down a one way street is as unacceptable as driving (although its probably a heck of a lot less dangerous).

As for reversing, if someone is doing that to park or something that doesn't seem against the spirit of things. If they're doing it just to avoid going the 'wrong way' then they're idiots. Too many idiots around.

My office window looks out onto a one way street, and at least 10 -15 cars and HGV's go down it the wrong way every day!! I've even seen a guy in his van threatening a guy in a car that was going the correct way!! I'm always threatening to set a camera up. (but I'm lazy!)

I live on a one way street and have learnt to keep an eye open for people going the wrong way. There's a carpet shop at the end of the road, an apparently their vans are exempt from the law in this case.[;)]

Carpet vans are exempt from the law? Surely not.

Maybe they are the 'Fifth emergency service'? I may try dialling 999 and reporting the next vomit incident when my little one next pukes all over me. (probably tonight!)

There is a tiny bit of one way street at the end of my road, noone takes any notice of it. When you're looking for a parking space, you pop down it the wrong way. I've done this in front of coppers and they didn't care......
