Reporting an incident

OK sorry this didn't happen on a commute, but it seems to me like the best place for this question. On my way home from a ride last night up Wimbledon Hill a car full of lads went past me. One of the passengers squirted some liquid in my face twice then they sped off laughing. Now I remembered their numberplate and car make, but how do I report it? If I just say some guys squirted stuff at me I have serious doubts about it being taken seriously.

I'm not expecting any great outcome, but I think I should do something.

    Assault. Report it.

Yes, it's a common assault, plus offences under section 59 PRA, and "placing any object on (or above) a highway with intent to endanger another road user". I had a near identical incident (albeit on a pedestrian) to divvy out to my team for investigation last year.

I had a similar thing a few weeks back and I reported it to S.Yorks police and they took it seriously. The only trouble was I hadn't quite got the car reg right.[:I]
I was only a letter out but he wasn't going to let me fish for the right one. Other than that they were very willing to take action and follow it up.

The first thing you can/should do is tell the police and if you're not happy with their response you should do something about that too. ie complain to their superiors.
