Creaking crank

Ive had a giant tcr 0 for about 2 months now and done about 1000 miles however ive had a creaking crank. This is both when im pedaling normally, although not very loud but when i go uphill or sprint there is a huge creaking noise just as my right foot is on the downstroke and to a lesser extent, when my left foot is on downstroke.

Its a full ultegra groupset, but it looks more complicated as no bolt on drive side to have a look. The other strange thing about it is towards the end of a 3 hour ride it will stop creaking as if it takes ages to warm up and is then fine however next day just when i think its gone it creaks again!!

The bike rides perfectly though so i dont think its anything too serious.

Can anyone suggest a way of stopping this?[:)]

Thanks for help[:)]

Probably getting a new crank. I've heard the crank's splined interface that fits onto the bottom bracket gets worn, and slightly out of shape. It's probably due to repeated stress and it causes a bit of fatigue in the metal, so accelerating or climbing when there's more force on it it'll be worse.

Have you tried adjusting the end load on the BB bearings - slacken off the 5mm Allen key pinch bolts and use the plastic tool to take up the end load, retighten the crank bolts. It's also worth checking to see that the BB spindle is lightly greased too.

If you have only had the bike a couple of months and you bought it from a shop, take it back, it must be due some sort of service anyway.

I wonder if this is the same noise as I get?

I've started getting creaks from the chainset end in the last couple of months. Definitely crank/BB, because it's only while I'm pedalling and is louder under load, especially out of the saddle. On a hot day it sounds almost like a car engine pinking (remember those?)

I thought it was a failing BB, but:-
    - it's a newish Chorus BB, which has only done 3-4000 miles and been generally looked after;
    - it stopped altogether last week when I was snailing my way round the Black Forest. It did rain all week.

I can't detect any roughness turning the pedals by hand.

i have this, what i do to stop it-

undo the cranks. hopefully theyre self extracting so you just need a allen key
    tighten them up agian
    undo them again
retighten to the tightness they need

    for me the creek dissapears.

maybe greasing the interface aswell might work.

I was convinced that I had the same problem with my Giant. After searching this forum I came advice that it is almost never the bottom bracket. In my case it was the seatpost shim that needed greasing.

I am sure you have isolated the problem (as ASC1951 suggests by pedalling out of the saddle etc.). I just wanted to highlight to novices, such as myself, who are reading this think that they have the same problem to make sure it is the bottom bracket first as if I was not given this advice I would have wasted a lot of time/money for no reason.

I had a creak as well, only under power going up hill, so I replaced my BB. Still creaking, so I stripped the front end ,wheels forks the lot. I had over tightened the stem onto the carbon stearer and crushed it months ago and the creaking was the carbon breaking up.
