Brittany -- try camping, or use B&B's/hotels?

My wife and I have a fortnight off in July and are thinking of going to Brittany. We've never cycle-toured in France before, our experience of cycling there being limited to a guided MTB descent, and using a couple of hired VTT for exploring/going to the shops for a day or two when on holiday in 2003.

Having used the Cycling Ireland and Cycling Britain LP guides in the past, we're sorry to see that these are out of print, as is Cycling France. We'd welcome any tips/advice and guide book/map suggestions.

why not use any old guide book/ map to plan a rough route, allowing 30-40 miles per day.If you are camping the local tourist information centres are useful for locating campsites that never make it into guidebooks. Same goes for B and B etc. Haven't done Brittany like this but did do Normandy in High season with family and didn't have any problems finding campsites.I would expect the coastal areas to be most busy but as there are only two of you, most campsites could find space.Good luck.
  • I had oyster poisoning there once...never ever again will I eat them. Lovely beaches.
    Gravity sucks
  • Cycle-camping in Brittany is great. There's loads of camp-sites ,virtually every town and village has one. They certainly won't be crowded in July and the municipal ones are good and very cheap - look for "Camping Municipal " signs . The privately owned ones usually have lots more facilities and are more expensive. You won't have any problem finding any of them as they'll be signposted in and on the outskirts of the towns and villages -look for the tent motif.Thoroughly recommended if you don't mind humping tents and sleeping bags around.

Check out Geoff Husbands site, www.Breton-Bikes.com" , lots on info on touring in France even if you are not going on one of his (highly recommended!) tours.
