I'm looking at getting a new winter training bike for this winter and was looking to only spend around the œ600 mark. I have my eye on a Ribble winter frame with Mirage groupset and Mavic Aksiums for around the œ600 mark. Does any one know of any other online retaillers that offer a bike of similar spec for the same money?

Planet X will put together a 105 equipped Kaffenback for œ699. Great bike but only available in beige.

well, yes and no......but mainly no.

• If I had a VN Chinook in my fleet then I'd just have to get the VN Yukon as my winter bike. Go on, move your groupset down to a Yukon frameset in October and then freshen up your Chinook next April.

Sorted.

Thanks for the planetX suggestion, yes the beige is a bit ugly but the fact that it is designed primarily as a cross bike might kill two birds with one stone. If I fancy giving cyclocross a try it would fit the bill.

Yes, I would love to be able to afford a VN Yukon or Amazon for use over winter but unfortunately I can't justify the expense on a winter bike. I've been looking for a reasonable titanium frameset on EBay in my size but they are few and far between.

Planet X also do a Tiagra-equipped Superlight Team for œ599. However, it doesn't have mudguard eyes/clearance so might not be suitable for winter training.

Might make make a difference to your choice that Ribble are currently seeling the last of the 06/07 winter bikes for œ399, Camapag Mirage, but leaves some in your budget for better wheels etc.

Planet-X uncle john is a bit more pricey, but definately ticks the cyclocross box. Alternatively, the Kinesis Crosslight cross bikes are kicking about for about œ600 - œ700. I'm looking at both for the some purposes as yourself...

Anyone one else with anything to add? I've also seen this Tifosi which is pretty good value for money, does anyone here have one of these?

Have a look at Byercycles:-

http://www.byercycles.co.uk/

Got my Aravis Audax from them (more than your œ600 budget) but they do the Tifosi frames (CK6 and CK7) plus some others. Great bike, well put together. Handbuilt wheels still perfectly true after 1000's of winter km.

Proper old school bike shop. Worth ringing to discuss options with them as they'll do pretty much anything to order. They've got that website but they don't do anything online.

Yes i know what you mean about the disgusting beige. They used to paint the old Austin Allegros in a very similar colour. [xx(]

I got a cheap Dolan winter frame for only a little more than the ribble. Probably the same frame, paint job is nicer.
• Look around in your local shop. Many models are being phased out all together this year and you'll find many a bargin around what was a œ700 bike.

• Just get the ribble, plenty on here sing the praises of their bikes!

What about a Kenesis racelight, may be a bit more than 600 but I bought one as a winter bike and it's ended up as the bike I ride most, very comfy on long rides , has 4 point rack mounts ,it weighs about 22lbs with mudgaurds, peddles etc. and it's curved stays are to die for.

Surosa cycles in Oldham sell the same frame as the Dolan Presidio winter/audax frame for considerably less money...builds into a nice Winter bike.
• It's NOT BEIGE: it's coffee and it looks a lot nicer in reality than in photos.
And at least it's not the ubiquitous matte black or grey!
