Nightmare tour

I suppose it happens to some of us, and I'm sure this has also been said before, it wouldn't happen to us.
Our first night in Greece, Camping Parga, very early in the morning while deep asleep someone reached in our tent and stole our camera with over 450 pictures, our two mobile phones and about 80 euro's cash. I suppose we were lucky because after talking to another cyclist he said some thiefs like to use razors on the tents as they make less noise.
Needless to say the pictures were worth much more than the thief could imagine and I would have gladly paid a large sum just to get them back.
And thats not all, upon arrival at Brussels airport from Athens, Greece I found my bike badly demaged, needing 450 euro's in repairs.
We have learned quite a bit on this tour, like never take anything for granted, especialy security.
We still had a great time and are in the process of planning our fall tour.

We had a similar weekend tour when we lost bags, lost keys, got numerous punctures etc... it's 'character building', isn't it!! But hang on to the good memories and get back on the road!!!!0

Commiserations. The only thing that I'e had stolen out of my tent was beer at the Le Mans 24 hour motor cycle race. Mind you, with the on site beer prices our off site purchased beer became worth its weight in gold.0 -
Tough luck. Good you can be so philosophical about it though, even though you're probably gutted, good for you!

I offer this good news story to cheer you up:
I had a bar bag stolen in the most idyllic place in the world - Ratihi (sp?) in New Zealand. My guard was completely down and I just propped the bike outside a cafe so I could have an icecream in the sunshine.
Anyway, the bag wasn't there when I came out and I lost a camera, my diary and the usual tools and odds and ends...
Eight months later, I get an email from The NZ police asking if I knew anything about a little bag which had been found by a house-painter on a garage roof; my contact details were in the diary. I got it back within ten days and found everything intact, with the strange exception of a head-torch. The ink had run on some of the diary pages but the camera worked and all the pictures were fine!0 -

I saw the photo of your broken rim. that takes some doing.
But if you think about Flic, the aussie girl in Africa, that is a nightmare.

No one can compare a couple stolen articles and a broken rim with what happend to Flic. My wife and I really felt sorry with what happend to her. We hope she has a speedy recovery.
One has to wonder though how much luck is needed while on tour, besides being carefull.
We have read about Ann Mustoe and a few others going solo but lets be realistic it is dangerous.
It just takes one jerk to really mess up your day.

I absolutely disagree. Solo touring isn't dangerous - sure there's the odd accident but getting a few things nicked is an inconvenience, not a disaster.
Solo touring is good for the soul, 99.999% of all the people you meet are great. Don't let one event put you off.0 -
You're right, I'm probably still a bit peranoid.
On my first tour, (solo), I had a fantastic time, only worried the first couple days but than I felt totaly safe, even stayed a couple days at Parga camping without a problem.
Guess we just got lucky this time.
