Squaling brakes!!
Hi folks
I know this is an age-old problem but it's doing my nut in!
Just got some new brake blocks put on my Specialized Tricross. Not a drop of rain all day, bone-dry roads, but my brakes were squealing like hell all day today! It was quite embarrassing more than anything else.
Has anyone got a rough, simple ideas of how to cure this problem? (never understood the method of toeing in the brakes) They're cantis by the way...

You need to toe them in. Allow about 1mm extra at the trailing end of each block, in other words the slight "V" made by the blocks points in the same direction as the wheel rotates.
If toeing doesn't work I can only suggest trying some different blocks.0 -
New blocks have a hard skin when they come out of the mould, which causes the squealing. To speed up the "running in" process, find a hill and hammer down it, and give the brakes a good hard work-out (making sure there is no one behind first!). That normally does the trick.
Nobody ever got laid because they were using Shimano0 -
...or take them off and use a metal rasp.file on them.
If you end up going down the "new blocks" route, try some Koolstops or Swissstop GHPs.0 -
cheers folks, I'll try them all out.0
