Can anyone suggest a 1 inch threaded headset with a low stack height?
I am having problems with the lock nut stripping it's thread with a Stronglight A9 unit.

I just had the same problem. The shortest one I could find was only a cheapie steel Tange 30.2mm stack height from SJS for 12.99 plus postage. I'm told I could skim a couple of mil from the locknut too. It hasnt come yet - when it does I'll let you know if its any good. I'd prefer something better but there seems to be nothing approaching that stack height in a better quality -

    Thanks, boly.
    My LBS are stumped also.
It seema that modern threaded headsets have sealed or needle bearings that have a taller stack height requiring a greater length of steerer.
Until now I hade considered my '92 steel Condor to be of the 'modern' period! Silly me.
Are there any 'clssic bike' outlets that could help?

The A9's locknut is aluminium - so the threads will strip relatively easily. If you can get your A9 to work at all, how about trying a steel locknut from another headset?

Also if possible, change any washers for thinner ones.

    Another thought....

Are you sure the problem is caused by not enough of the locknut's thread engaging?

The opposite problem can happen when there is too much thread on the forks - because the A9 lockring has a lip on the top which limits the amount it can be tightened. More/thicker washers are the answer then.

    thanks, Pete, I will investigate.
I have tried with a steel locknut but this did not last long before becoming unable to retain its grip. The bike is currently with the LBS and they seem sure that it needs a lower stack height.

That Tange one could be a good idea then. Tange headsets are only cheap because they're heavy and basic - not because they're rubbish. That kind of headset lasts forever if kept properly adjusted and lubricated.

TR, Chris Juden on the CTC forum has a lot of useful stuff to say about headset sizes. I found that many of the LBS' round here really didnt understand about stack height. SJS were very helpful but did assure me that 30.2 was the shortest I'd be able to find although they could be specially made to order for œ80. It came this morning and is a lot nicer that I thought it would be . I'll fit it tomorrow and let you know what I was able to shave off and where.Whats the height you need?

Headset problem solved with a Tange unit from Mercian - œ9.95 plus p&p and not too heavy.
Apparently, my frame was desigened for a low stack height unit (probably all the rage in '92) and Tange are now one of the only options.
Thanks to all those who repied.

Can just echo pb ? I've had several Tange headsets over the years and every single one (even the el cheapo sort) equalled the (much more expensive) efforts of "name" manufacturers in build-quality, design and durability. Highly recommended, although not exactly lighter-than-air I will admit.
