9 Speed front crank work with 8 speed?

Hi All,

A little help for a beginner.[:)]

I need to change all the drive train components on my bike as they are now shot.
It's 8 speed on the rear, 3 on the front crank.
Whilst looking at the vast array of parts I have noticed that most front crank sets now state "for 9 speed use"

So will they work with my 8-speed rear and chain, or can I expect problems?

A little confused so any help appreciated

    it will still work...

    the chain rings will be slightly thinner, but will work with an 8 speed chain. However you may have a problem if you tried a nine speed chain as it may be too thin for the rear cassete sprocket

    I'd be tempted to run a 9spd chain with it actually. Works fine with an 8spd cassette and won't rub the rings at the front like the fatter 8spd chain can. But there's not much in it in practice.

    I would be careful, especially with older 8 speed cranks.

    Ive got a nine speed chain on my mtb and 8 spd crankset and cassette. The cassette's fine, the top 2 rings are fine, but put it on the granny (which is a 96 8spd ring) and the chain jams onto the teeth cos they're too big (and then wont shift up again - so I took off the granny, problem solved)
