Gran Fondo Registration

Next week i am off to Italy to ride in the GranFondo Campagnolo. (Lucky me) I do note on the website however that at registration they check for medical certificate and licencse.
Problem is i don't belong to a club, and therefore do not have a license. Does anyone know how rigorous the checks are, or if you actually do need a license?

many thanks

  • In my experience of Italian events it depends, i.e. sometimes you do and sometimes you don't. At this year's GF Felice Gimondi my friend had no license or medical certificate and had no problems whatsoever.

Hopefully someone with direct experience of the GF Campagnolo will be able to answer more specifically.
  • I'm going too, and all I have is a medical certificate certifying that I am medically fit to take part in competitive cycling and endurance / cyclosportif events. I do not have a licence, and will blag the rest!! See you there/ Staying at the Albergo Nuovo in Feltre 12/6 to 23/6, going walking the week after.

In the bigger events the sheer number of people at registration usualy means the organizers simply can't spend time double-checking everyone's licences and medical forms - but in the smaller GFs, with just a few hundred participants, no licence = no start.

The Campagnolo is one of the premier series events, so you may well get away with it, as there are 1000s of riders.

One way round it can be to see if the hotel can collect your event pack/number for you and have it ready for you at the hotel. I don't know if this is the case for the Campag, but some of the hotels in Cesenatico do this for the Nove Colli (a similar-sized event in the same series).

I know a few people without a licence who have been okay at the GFC registration with just a medical certificate. You should be okay.

Hopefully see you on the road there!
  • I read the race regulations on the website which seems to suggest that only Italian riders need a license and foreigners are separate.

My wife's a doctor so I've blagged a letter from her and I have a triathlon Scotland membership/race license so should be OK.

Seven of us are going to the Campag Gran Fondo from Glasgow and Edinburgh. We'll have Scottish saltire or Irn Bru jerseys. We'll be easy to spot bringing up the rear in a puddle of sweat.

Hope you enjoyed your training because time's up. I'm very worried. See you there.

I've ridden the GFC 3 times. You need a letter from your doctor stating you are fit to participate. I know that some riders in our group, ahem, faked the letter. You do not need a BC licence.

As I understand it, to get a racing licence in Italy you have to have a medical check, so showing your Italian licence demonstrates you are fit to ride.

Good luck & have fun, it's a great event.
  • I've entered, and paid for the souvenir shirt, but unfortunately can't make it this year. Now, according to the GF website I can defer for a year (which is nice) but can I defer the maglia purchase? A few club members are going and I'd be happy to let them have the shirt if they can explain the situation to the entry people. I think I've left it too late to email the organisers (and am thinking that I won't get a reply anyway.

    What to do?

I did it last year... but was in a tour group so all that was checked in advance. doing again this year. last year they weren't checking at registration but you never know. it's a risk and if you can get hold of a medical certificate do it.

By the way, the gran as opposed to media fondo is one hell of a hard ride. good luck to all who are trying it...

Ok, thanks for all replies. Looks like i will be ok with my medical certificate.
I took great heart from completing the WRC last weekend as part of my ramp up - so am feeling a bit more confident! Maybe missplaced?
Good look to all - i will see you over there -
