I recently bought a pair of these http://www.conti-tyres.co.uk/conticycle/ti%20grand%20prix%204000S.shtml and have had mixed feelings about them.

As Conti's tend to, it took me a fair while to scrub off the horrible shiny coating so that I actually got grip. Then there was something not quite right with the rear, it felt a bit loose, like it didn't have enough grip.

Then one night on the train, sitting on the floor because of not enough seats, I noticed I had actually installed my rear tyre backwards. The arrow (which I hadn't seen before) was pointing the wrong way. I duly turned the tyre round and hey presto, quality grip and stability!

I put a pair on yesterday and have been mightily impressed so far, they do seem to glide along though, certainly feel quite different to the GP4000.

Picked up my new ride shod with 4000S on Tuesday - Did a quick 50 miler out of London on to lumpy Surrey back roads.
Absolutely stonking. It's like driving a go-kart on slicks!

Bags of confidence from these. Was able to hit the brakes so hard I accidentally pulled an endo!
    Unusually comfortable too.

They seem to mark/cut less than 4000 25cs too, though I haven't really put enough miles on to tell.

I noted that the rubber compound flakes off similar to a slick tyre too - microscopic coating of black dust at the base of the seat tube.

Edit: Interesting point on rotational alignment - I wonder if this explains the responses from those who think standard GP4000s are not good! I seem to remember reading somewhere that it's all to do with the carcass construction.

"It's like driving a go-kart on slicks!" - interesting analogy. I always slide a go-kart on slicks, seems quicker that way ;-)
