I might have to cycle back from the l2b, which route would be best, and how hard will it be? (Its either that, or I cycle to hastings which is about 45 miles away, or portsmouth which is 60 - to be honest would be shorter if i cycled back)

I've done it before and the problem is you can't really retrace your steps. One year I went up the A23 until it became the M23 and then took main roads. Not too bad but not very pleasant on the A23. Another I took a different route but got hopelessly lost...

So, in short, don't follow me.
  • May have to do the same myself, the guy in my lbs who has done the event several times says there will be quite a few cycling back. So far cycling back is looking better than getting a car into Brighton.

Iv got another option [:D] not really looking forward to cycling back, mainly because i have work the next day and I wont get away with calling in sick (dodgey right knee will hurt like a bugger) - Sister lives in brighton, and said I can have the keys to her place - im gunna dump the bike at her place, change shower etc, then get the train back, and pickup the bike a few days later [:)]

Years ago I did a L2B route that lead me all the to Brighton but did the last five miles going down the A23.
It was several B roads like the B2028. I can't remember exactly the roads. I'll find out later.

If I do ride back, I'm not going all the way down on the A23.

I normally ride back via Lewes, Ashdown Forest (Groombridge) and Sevenoaks - starting from Brighton go east along the coast road toward Newhaven, then follow the river inland to Lewes. It's flat thereafter until Ashdown Forest. Then a bit hilly, but you can always bail out at Tunbridge Wells and catch a London train from there. (which is Network South-East; I think all trains on the Southern services network - not just Brighton ones - are banning bikes that day).
