Deep drop brakes

I'm after a set of deep drop brakes, to allow me to put 700c wheels on a bike made for 28" wheels

Are these the only ones that will do it or will something like these do the job?

  • By 28" (actually commonly applied to 700s!) do you mean 27"?

If so, brake length needed when fitting smaller 700s will depend on the frame/fork clearances. For a bike built for close clearances with 27s, then the shorter of the two you link probably O.K. For a relaxed touring frame for 27s you will probably need the longer of the two. The 70s Falcon I've just recommisioned needs very long drop even with 27s in.

but if 700c are 28" surely the drop would need to be shorter, if the bike was designed for 27" ?? I think I'm getting confused.
  • Trust me!

700, 27, 28 and 26 (which is actually used for at least two quite different rim sizes!) are pretty arbitrary nomenclatures. Standard sizes are formally/technically specified by ERTO (or ETRO, I can never remember which!) according to rim diameter and width. Thus a 700 is 622 and a 27" is 630. The former is thus 4mm less in radius!

I do trust you. I ordered the Alonghas just to be safe, though the others are prettier.

Good move on the Alonghas - I've got a rear Tektro caliper in the parts bin because it just wasn't quite far enough (although I could just file the slots).
