I would like to hand out "The Biggest Tw@t" awared to the bloke this morning who shoved me off the pavement back into the road... Into the way of the fire-engine I was trying to avoid.

Thanks f**kwit, for telling me to "Get off the fookin' pavement" I bailed onto it and stopped right away, I wasn't riding, I was STATIONARY WAITING UNTIL THE EMERGENCY VEHICLE HAD PASSED!

You also deserve a bravery award for RUNNING AWAY and hiding in your office building, when I took somewhat aggressive exception to your efforts to keep the pavement for peds. That took some real balls.

To be fair we wouldn't like it if cars and motorbikes starting 'bailing' onto the pavement.

What a dope! no matter whether you should/ should not have mounted the pavement the fact that he assaulted you was bad enough - but to shove you into the path of a fire engine makes him a W**ker of the highest order. Did he realise why you did mount the pavement and do it anyway?

Should have smacked him in the face!!

  • comsense - I have no idea, he was probably unaware that anything was happening that didn't centre around himself.

EMD - I would have done if he hadn't run away.

  • Aah, all they would do is ask him if he did it, he would say no and they would hold their hands up and say, well, we can't press it any further, but how about a œ30 fine for being on the pavement?!

That's a kick in the bollocks offence (or a whack in the snot box if you're sporting look cleats) if ever I saw one.
  • Indeed I do sport look cleats, though on with the covers and I can prance around like a fox at ballet lessons. Kind of.

Jac, I'm sorry the pavement is for PED's, you should find somewhere else out of the way and only mount the pavement as a last resort.
Cyclists get enough bad press for riding on the pavement.

I think if you bothered to read the post, you'll find that Jacomus mounted the pavement in order to get out of the way of a fire engine. And then stopped. So he wasn't actually riding on it. Where else do you suggest he went? Onto the opposite side of the road?

Personally, I'd pull over to the kerb, rather than mount the pavement, but that's because I'm crap at riding up kerbs... But I relaise that on a narrow lane, with perhaps nose to tail traffic the other way, me pulled up in the gutter is still going to be in the way, so I'd probably hoik the bike up onto the pavement too. if there was time, I'd dismount first.

I though you were allowed to mount the pavement even when in a car to get out of the way of emergency vehicles.

Yes you most definitely are allowed to mount the pavement if it's in order to get out of the way of an emergency vehicle.

CYCLING on the pavement is illegal.

    - Having a bike on the pavement.
    - Standing over a bike on the pavement.
    - Holding a bike on the pavement.
Are not illegal (as I understand the law - but I'm not a copper, lawyer or judge). The OP states he was stationary - shame some people seem to selectively read posts and start slating posters to pass the time.

It sounds like the pedestrian was totally out of order to me. (But then I wasn't there of course....)

If it was me with blues and twos coming up behind I would probably pull over to the kerb, then if the space to get past was small then put the front brake on to get the back wheel up on to the pavement and lift the front wheel up. So not CYCLE on, but definately BE on the pavement. It would seem to be a sensible course of action and if a ped pushed me over I'd probably call him a fool too. [:(!]

I get on OK with myself, so why can't we all get on with each other?

So, deliberately pushing you off the footpath into the path of a speeding fire appliance? Sounds like atempted murder, if ever there was.

Once he's finished shi77ing himself upon being arrested, he'll probably get a charge for affray of common asault, but he sure deserves it.

Well, I agree the ped was a complete and utter a*sehole and there should have been no problem about mounting the pavement to provide clearance for an emergency vehicle. FWIW today I also had to clear a space to let a fire engine through, at some lights - which in my case I did by going ahead across them despite the fact that they were red, along with three or four other vehicles (going onto the pavement wasn't an option due to railings, but personally I would still have done it my way anyway). Who really cares? Common sense should prevail. If you need to give clearance to an emergency vehicle, you have to do it whatever way works safely for you.

Seems quite reasonable to hop onto the pavement to let a fire engine past, if it is safe to do so, so long as you then stop. Car drivers do this all of the time if theres an emergency vehicle, and I've never seen anyone have a go at a motorist for that.

I've had an old lady cross storm up to me to tell me off for that, when I pulled on to a driveway that crossed the pavement at the BSM in the middle of Cambridge a few years ago. I completely ignored her.

Were some bloke to actually assault me for doing that he'd either be facing legal action or eating d-lock, I don't know which. Most likely the former.
