Please help: 165mm Cranks

Hi all

After a very long ride last Sunday (120 miles), my knee is giving me trouble. I've had surgery twice for a torn meniscus in the back of my knee, which means that if I do any big efforts while the knee is bent more than 90 degrees, it becomes sore (and can potentially lead to arthritis).

I currently ride 175mm cranks, because that's what came with the bike, and I'm 1.68m tall (5'6" I think). I've done some research, and the consensus seems to be that I should be using 170mm cranks, but that as I have knee problems, I should go shorter.

I have a 105 groupset with tripple crankset, and looking on the Shimano site, I see that they do produce a Shimano 105 Tripple Chainset on 165mm (as well as 170, 172.5 & 175), but I cannot find anywhere in the UK that will sell them. I've seen a couple of online shops in the US that do them, but not UK.

The closest I've seen Dura-Ace tripple (at about œ180!!), or R700 compact double.

Does anyone know where I could find a tripple crankset in the UK that would fit my requirements? 165mm, tripple (30/39/50 or close), 10 speeds, under œ100

Please help! my knee is crying for mercy now :(

Cheers

  • if you want hollowtech 2 crank in a triple 165mm Dura ace is the only way to go in the UK as Madison don't seem to import the 105 triple in 165mm

    Hi Graeme

I assume Madison are the UK distributors for Shimano. Are you in contact with them?

What other alternatives are there? I'm not set on having a Shimano part. As long as it works and is a tripple (or may be a compact), I'll be happy. But I am after a 165mm crankset

It doesn't seem right to use a Dura Ace part on a training bike, and I don't have the ~œ200 to burn unfortunately :(

Those look very interesting! Chainset + new bottom bracket for œ60 + œ3 delivery. You were not kidding when you said it was a bargain!

So far it's the best option I've seen. Assuming this would work on a Shimano 105 setup (and I haven't seen anything indicating otherwise), I may well be set! Thank you very much for that

Thorn do 110mm BCD cranks in lengths from 150 upwards.

The missus has a triple on her bike with 155mm arms i.e. the correct length for her legs.

The Stronglight/Sugino XD 110/74 BCD crank is a great bargin and super flexible. I use it as a double on one bike and also with just one ring on my single speed. If you want something with a bit more class look at the TA Carmina

  • Hi,

Yes I work in a shop and had someone recently who wanted a shimano hollowtech 2 triple in 165mm.

170 or longer, more shimano hollowtech 2 choice exists in the UK - but not in 165mm.

Loads of non shimano alternatives available as others have pointed out thou.

After a few weeks with the new Stronglight Impact cranks, I thought I would report back.

The good: the shorter cranks are indeed helping aleviate my knee troubles, although they are still there to a lesser degree. Still, I'm happier with these cranks.

    The bad:

I feel the cranks are made for wider chains, may be 8 speed chains, and that the rings are spaced a little too far appart. I occasionally manage to lodge the chain between the large and middle ring, and loose drive. I can shift down and up again which solves it, but it's an annoyance.

The chainset is visibly lower quality than the 105 chainset it replaces

Chainset + aluminium bottom bracket (110mm) is around 50gr heavier than the previous 105 chainset + bottom bracket. As this is a training bike, I don't really care, but I thought I'd point it out anyway

I found the recommended 110mm bottom bracket was a tad too large for my road bike, so I may still get a shorter one

So far, it's a keeper, but only as this bike is destined to become a training bike in the long term, once I can actually afford a decent carbon ride. When I do get the mentioned carbon bike, I'll most likely budget in dura-ace 165mm cranks (assuming I don't shift to Campy)

Thank you all for your suggestions, my knee really appreciates it

Thanks for the feedback. I'm glad it helped. The chainset is often advertised as 8 speed. The shifting problems are caused By Shimano wanting everybody to use their recommended gearing set up. Deviation will be punished!

Our Impact was very nicely finished; much more so than any Shimano one I've seen. Different strokes I suppose.....
