SPD shoes and airport security

All going on a tour later in the yr and flying. Just a quick question on whether anyone has worn spd shoes with cleats through security at an airport (and not been delayed) or whether I should just pack them in my bikebag/panniers, check them, and go barefoot. Dont particularly want to pack another pair of shoes/flipflops.

Most of the airports seem to be making you take yer shoes off anyway - you puts em on the conveyer belt with your hand baggage and jacket to be scanned. I reckon they should be fine as 'hand baggage' - just take them off and put them on the belt before you walk through the metal detector!

Then laugh quietly when the puzzled people behind you at security take their shoes off too...

Over the last couple of years I have been asked to take my shoes/boots off and put then through the scanner several times, so doing that with spd shoes shouldn't be a problem. Just use odder eater insoles...

I've walked through loads of airport security gates with spds on, and only once set off an alarm - at a tiny local airport in Vietnam.

Have recently flown on Ryanair through Limoges airport where they are very conscientious about security. My SPD shoes where in my handbaggage and raised no comment after passing through the x-ray. Previously I have had bungy cords and nail-clippers confiscated there and they were suspicious once about aspirin tablets I had!

Shouldn't be any problem at all.

I've cycled to work in SPD's and just put them through the scanner.

Security will see that they are just shoes.

They have to scan steel toe capped boots all the time.

Lots of shoes have metal bits in - work boots, high heels, safety boots. I frequently fly in my working boots because they're too heavy to carry. Like they say, just take 'em off and go through the metal detector in your socks.

Since the shoe bomber, many security teams will ask you to remove bulky shoes anyway, whether they have metal in them or not.

Security staff at Reykjavik insisted on examining my shoes in 2002. They were damp, aromatic and had been worn everyday for a 4 week tour....

Last few times I've flown I've had to put them through the scanner.

The policy at the moment in UK airports is very much "shoes off" for most people, including staff going airside.
