I am planning on heading over to Dieppe for a few days, and wanted to drive down to the port. I was wondering if anybody knows whether there is any longterm parking at Newhaven port. I've been on their website but the info's a bit sparse. Thanks

I cycled via Newhaven last year and there was a carpark directly in front of the terminal - though I couldn't tell you if it was long term parking.

Unfortunatley I found the Newhaven terminal a bit of a dump...(Dieppe was good though)

I went over to Dieppe from Newhaven at the start of May.

I took the train down there, so cannot comment on the parking facilities, but be aware that the facilities at Newhaven ferry terminal are virtually non-existant. There was a drinks vending machine and some toilets, and that was about it !

Oh, and the loading on the Newhaven side was different to my usual ferry experiences - all the cars and lorries were allowed on first, and the bikes could only get on at the very end. On the Dieppe side, the bikes could get on first - oh the satisfaction as you glide by the cars all lined up on the quayside ...

Enjoyed the cycling in Dieppe - pick up a copy of the Green Route cycling guide at the tourist office. This has details of a flat route along a former railway line out of Dieppe to Neufchatel, which is very straightforward if a trifle monotonous - we went out that way and returned via country lanes.

Also if you are in Dieppe on a Saturday the market is a MUST !

If I was you I'd find a nicer bit of town and park in a populated side street for a few days. Newhaven port area is scabby and I wouldn't want to leave my car there. Newhaven itself has a poor reputation round these parts with good reason! The ferry operator (Transmanche) runs on a shoestring with decrepit old Sardinian ferries. I'd take a sandwich with you for the crossing as the catering is sh*te. Having said that, the cycling round Dieppe and that part of Normandy is well worth the effort.

Ah, good old Transmanche, we had 'interesting' journeys both to and from France when went over for the Tour. It's mainly for trucks, about 20 non-commercial vehicles on the entire ferry.

We saw a single deker bus (a bendy one) go on and off the ship at least 6 times while we were waiting to drive our vehicle on. It actually reveresed itself out on many occasions. It was just pure comedy. There seemed to be no organisation and the ramp to put trucks on the top deck was broken so they were putting the trucks on one-by-one on an internal lift.

There was some Italian guy who just ran around the loading area waving his arms frantically, saying go, stop, go, stop, go, stop. We laughed so much waiting to get on we had 2 out of 3 of us with tears running down our faces.

On the wa back we boarded the ferry on time, about 20 mins into the journey the captain announced that the journey time would double as they had an engine problem.

They only had one ferry operating when went as they had crashed the other one in Dieppe

I'd have thought you could just park in the terminal car park. From memory, parking isn't that expensive; sure it's only something like œ5 a day.

I've parked on Newhaven streets very close to the ferry many times while I went to France for a few days with my bike. I've never had any problem.
  • Thanks for the advice

jon_s, when you went to Dieppe did you just buy a ticket at the terminal when you arrived and then hop on the ferry or did you book in advance? Thanks.

RBSF - I booked in advance, and the tickets were gbp 25 return. There were other people buying their tickets at the terminal though, and I think they were paying gbp 17 one way.

This is a useful thread - I'm going to France via Newhaven/Dieppe next month, with Transmanche Ferries. I got such a cheap crossing it had to be tried - I guess it's worth putting up with rubbish catering if you get an overnight return sailing for less than half the cost of a Brittany Ferries rip-off...

MDB - I did the overnight crossing. I would suggest pre-booking a cabin on the ferry before you go. We didn't, and by the time the queue had subsided, that had eaten into 30 minutes of valuable sleep time on the crossing (important as we "lost" an hour when we went) which made for some very sleepy people when we disembarked in Dieppe.

Still, I suppose that meant we made an early stop for a strong coffee (and obviously a pain au chocolate ! ) Every cloud
    and all that ...[:)]

Yes, fortunately I've booked cabins, both there and back. With a five and a three-and-a-half year old in tow there simply is no other choice...
