Anyone else coming along to the Essex Tunner. It normally has a good C+ turn out and I could do with the company.

    Hi Mat,

    Nice to see you again.
I'll be there but probably doing the 75 as have had a bad knee all year since coming off two weeks running over Christmas.
Are you still riding the Focus?

I am not up to the 100 miler yet but have signed up for 40 miles!
  • Superb ride today on the 100. It was a perfect day with the fastest 100 done at 4 hours 55. Mine a more sedate 5.47 but great company, cracking banter and a nice tingle in the legs this evening. Thanks to Orchid, Essex Roads and Basildon CCs for another great event.

Was a good day, weather was good not too hot like last year.
I did it in 5.30 managed to stay with the tree leading lads till about the half way point when there was mix up whether we where going to stop ore not. Felt like the where time trailing it rather than a sportive ride was almost glade when we got dropped.
I like to thank the Essex road lad who kindly directed the way back. The feed stops where a bit poor this year only one at about 10 miles from the end and only with water.

I did the 40 too - you know we ought to have a way of recognising each other. It really was a great day and I got round in 2 hours 38 min which I was pretty pleased with. And if the guy from Essex Roads who rode with me for the last five miles or so reads this, thanks for company it really helped.

I did the 100 again (4th year in a row) and enjoyed the ride. Stuck with the front group for the first 30 miles or so. However, once we hit the lumpy bits I realised I would blow up if I carried on at that speed, so backed off and took it at my own pace. I was joined by a girl from Wanstead riding the 75 who was off course. I rode with her as far as Finchingfield and then directed her onto the Dunmow Road - hope she made it back OK.

The rest of the ride I was on my own - hardly saw a sole. I passed a few small groups but basically rode a pleasant 65 miles solo finishing in 5:45 - not bad considering I am recovering from a nasty bout of bronchitis.

Yeah it was very fast this year with Nick & Ian pushing from the front.
I've managed to finish in the lead group for the last three years with av speed of 19.0 to 19.5mph and was hoping to hang on this year, but no chance!
The pace was fierce and I had trouble eating while trying to gulp down air!, it wasn't just me struggling as I noticed the group was getting steadily smaller as riders dropped off the back.

A few miles short of Finchinfield (41miles) I had a puncture and had to stop with a mixture of frustration and relief.
From my computer I found that the 2nd hour was at an average of 21.0mph with the last 15min of that hour at 22.0 mph average - too fast for my legs!.
After fixing the puncture I stopped at Finchinfield cafe for tea and toast then continued with the following group at a much more relaxing speed.
Finished in a time of 5h 26m which felt hard at the end probably because of my earlier effort. It turned out to be a lovely day for the ride with plenty of sunshine at the end.
