I need a new commute bike, hopefully with some pace. I have some road bikes with drops but am looking for something with flat bars that could also be used for a tiny bit of off road (knobbly tyre space needed). Also I might do a short tour in the alps so need to put my panniers on the back.
Essentially 70% city, 20% Tour, 15% Off Road. Budget circa œ500

Any ideas please???

  • Second hand On One Inbred with two sets of wheels/tyres?

Or any decent quality older style rigid (or even front sus) mtb - some have 'grd and pannier mounts.

A 26" wheeler Thorn - not sure what price the basic models are new.

A quicl trawl through ebay should find something suitable.

I've got a Kona Smoke, it costs œ220-œ300, depending on where you get it from, and I've commuted, toured and gone off road.
It's a chromoly MTB frame and fork with Kona geometry, so it handles really well. The components are cheap, but I just used them until they wore out and then upgraded them.
It also looks fairly cool as it comes in stealth black and even has mudguards!

If you've already got road bikes I too would go for a good rigid mtb to cover anything you can't use a road bike for. I would suggest the Marin Muirwoods, but I'm sure thre's a huge choice at œ500.
