Is Petacchi likely to ride all of the TdeF?

I ask because the odds on him winning the green jersey are 11/1 and in light of his recent Giro form I thought it might be worth a punt (after the success of my bet on Floyd last year). But if he's going to pack up his bags at the first sight of the mountains I may desist. Any thoughts?

• not sure he'll finish it if i'm honest. might be better to put a punt on big Tom

Yeah i think he will start, Milram the sponsor will certainly make sure of that. The tour is very big in Germany, on the mainstream ZDF channel as well as Eurosport. He'll try to bag 2-3 stages early on then quit. To an italian finishing the Giro is a big thing......they seem to loose interest as soon as the road head upwards, and the press focus will switch to the Yellow jersey.

Correct me if I am wrong but Petacchi has a track record similar to Cipolini in the TDF, hit the hills and off the bike he climbs....

For all Petacchi may be good at winning on the line- I think he will not be sprinting for all those intermediate points that can decide who gets the green jersey...

Boonen, Friere, Mcewen, Hushovd would be safer bets...

McEwen would be a better bet for the Green IMO!!

If he's in with a good shout of the green jersey he'll stick it - to win both points jerseys in one year would be a dream - however if McKewen is ahead when they hit the mountains he'll climb off

• Wise words people, a general consensus seems to be emerging here. I'll put my money elsewhere.

Now just watch him take 5 stages, ride throught the mountains and ride into Paris clad entirley in green.
• hasnt gone over a mountain yet let alone finish one. odds should be 50-1. Boonen is "due" it this year I think. Has had a fair share of bad luck in the tour. McEwan's my favourite sprinter but his lead-out man Steegemans (SP?) left and I don't think Lotto have adequately replaced him. Hushovd finished first in Paris last year but I just don't think he's as strong as the other two.

• Boonen seems a liitle slower this year though. Wonder why?

Sounds like a smart move to me! - Italiani sono furbi!
• It's odd how McEwen is considered a good bet yet he's just abandoned the Giro before it hit the serious mountains.

The fact is that Petacchi is Italian and the Giro is the focus of his season. By winning five stages and the points jersey he shouldn't have anything left to prove to anyone. But he'll start the Tour and probably the Vuelta too and it'd take a brave man to bet against him adding to his forty five stage wins in grand tours. McEwen's focus is the Tour so he'll skip the hard parts of the Giro to ensure he's rested up for the Tour.

Personally I'd say Petacchi was good odds at 11-1 as he's riding for a sponsor who'll want coverage for the whole Tour so he may be asked to complete the race. We know he's capable of it and, as a fan of cycling who is interested in the history of the sport, I think Petacchi may well target the green jersey to show he is a great sprinter.

Did you not watch the Giro or doesn't the Zoncolan count. He can climb far better than McEwan but Le Tour isn't that important to him so it depends on how he feels and what the team are out to achieve.

• I think Pettachi is capable of completing the whole of the TDF. he did very little grand tour racing last year, no more than a few days, so i expect to see him try to complete at least two of the three GTs of 07, surely the green jersey must be something he wants? Or the three jerseys in the same season?

________Our behaviour is a function of our experience.
• Well, when he was in Green after winning those stages in the 2003 tour, he suffered quite a bit on the first mountain stage and climbed off if I remember correctly. I expect a repeat.

I am sure I read somewhere that he has been working on his climbing. Finishing the Giro shows that he ain't that bad if he wants it.
baby elephants are just so 2006...
• He is a MUCH better climber than 2003/4 and his sponsor will do much better out of a Green Jersey than any amount of Vuelta wins. The WC is not on a course to his liking so he wont use the Vuelta as prep for that. I can see him going to Paris, but sometimes bookies know things that we don't.

I'm going to have a flutter on Petacchi. I think if he focuses he can win the thing.

• He climbed off the other year because he was 'ill' not because of the hills...

• Stephen S - sorry I was talking about TDF, not his overall ability. To my mind he aint interested in France once the lumps arrive. A few early stages = job done for him.
