After years of using Conti- I have wrecked two of the new GP4000S under 50 miles.

The first went on a minor pothole- tyre split - i realise that this is partly rider error but the bump was much more minor than many others with other Conti tyres that stood up to it without problems.

The second went when the tyre started to lift off the rim- separating the kevlar cord from the tyre. Again this may have been affected by poor fitting by me- but I have fitted loads of tyres, checked for runout before riding etc .

Anyone else had problems?- my confidence is zero with them

The importers are not responding to my emails

  • Mine have done about 170 miles now, the shiny stuff has come off nicely and they are a nice grippy tyre. No problems for me.

  • Thanks Guys- perhaps i have just been unlucky.

The importers have responded and asked me to return the tyre for evaluation.

If i was the inept one- will let you know!

Only done 450 miles but no problems so far. Nice feedback from the road too. Do not mention the P word but OK so far in wet and dry and among the French and Surrey flints.

pgs - you lucky beggar - Westcott - what a location!
I usually ride through your village on the weekend training run - Two words - Sheephouse Lane!

Does the tread cut as much as the GP4000? I was surprised to find mine unmarked after their inaugural trip, but prob. too early to tell.

My new ride was delivered with GP4000S on Tuesday - A quick 40 miles London to Surrey - Absolutely stonking. Like riding on rails.
    Superbly communicative, comfortable, super sticky.
In fact, so sticky that when I rolled the bike over the carpet, it sucked up the fibres in such a way I could see the carpet pattern on the tyres!

A similar post just mentioned that if a GP4000 is fitted with incorrect rotation, they ride poorly.
  • the importer swapped one tyre for me- which was impressive as 50% may have been operator error when fitting.

250 miles in they are going well- perhaps I was just unlucky

i've always been a michelin pro 2 race user and recently changed to gp4000 (as they came in ncier colours) and i also opted to go for 25mm tyres as continetal are one of the few that produced coloured tyres in 25mm.(besides, the michelins actually measure 24mm and the contis 25mm so this is perhaps a better back to back test)

I am very impressed with them. Compared to michelin pro 2 race they are not quite as fast(confirmed by the fact that officially they have a slighly higher rolling resistance coefficient)

Positive points are that they are ery sure footed and comfortable with noticebably less road noise than the michelin pro 2 race and so they are the closest thing to tubulars i have ridden that is practical on city roads.

They are also easier to get on the rim due to the very supple casing and bead. Corneing is very stable with excellent grip.

Tiem will tell how durable they are but so far the signs are good as thy lasted the london brigtoncycle ride ! lol
