When i'm pedalling along in a high gear my chain wants to skip to the next highest gear(next smallest cog). To prevent this which way do i turn the barrel adjuster on the downtube? Also do i turn it whilst i'm in the skipping gear or the one above or below it?

we'll see things they'll never see

Towards the bigger cogs is anti-clockwise I think.

Or turn it a little bit one way (say half a turn) - does it make it better or worse? If it makes it worse turn it more the other way and keep turning til problem solved.

Viewed from the front of the bike it should be turned anti-clockwise. Go a 1/2 turn and it should be enough.
