Shim for front mech- do they exist?

I am migrating some 105 10 speed components onto a steel tourer frame with Reynold 531 tubing, I believe the seat tube is 26.8 but the front mech is 31.8. Of course this isn't going to fit and I need a shim to compensate this and I have spent a fair amount of time looking around the net trying to find a solution.

Does anyone know of such an item?

could you replace the band with a 26.8 one? hard to say without seeing the mech but my be possible
  • Yep. you can get shims for this. 'Most' LBs should be able to help you out

don't know about 105, but the bit of the front mech that bands on to the frame is identical on tiagra and sora (and it can be removed from the rest of the mech assembly). found this invaluable when i found that the tiagra front mech i got with a new groupset was the too small for the alu framed bike so kept the original bit from the sora mech and job's a good 'un.

saved the tiagra band for when i put the sora front mech onto an old 531 frame (which it fits), so it says both tiagra and sora on it!

if i had a better signature, i'd use that instead
riding on my bicycle, i saw a motorcrash…

I have had a look at the 105 and there is now way of separating the band, I have a Sora mech too and it is as you say possible to dismantle and change. I will have to go for the shim option, Steve, sorry to be fick but what is an LB?
  • Purpose made shims do exist, but equally as good - and better in trems of marking the frame tube - will be one of the inserts that often come with handlebay mounted lights (or even bells!). Hard plastic and seem to be just the right size for standard steel seat tubes! Even if you haven't got any old ones in the box, a cheap œ Shop one will be cheaper than the "real" thing!

Most Shimano MTB front mechs now come with 2 sets of plastic shims, so they can produce one front mech to fit all frame sizes.
They may do the same for some of the road mechs. Look on the Shimano website and if it says 'multiclamp' then it comes with the shims.

If you're building a touring bike then I presume you aren't going to use a 52 tooth big ring, in which case LX and XT both have variants that go up to 48 tooth and they are multiclamp.

Had the same problem as you in the past and now resolved by restoring old frame. Result means I have unwanted shim to size down from 31.8 to 28.9. It's yours if you want it for the cost of the postage. E-mail me if you're interested.

sjcp - my gruppo is 105 triple with a 52 on the front so will need to keep the original but thanks for the advice, John I will email regarding the shim and do a deal for you.

Thanks for all your help... forums are great!
