King Alfred day would upset the Danes.
Any king day would upset someone, come to think of it.

Queen Day would be good like the Dutch but wouldn't be as good under Charles The Third cos he's rubbish.

Ok FM, if it has to be a BRITISH day then what can appeal to the sweaty socks as well as the Taffs and the potato-eating sons of the sod from the land of blarney?

I suspect those of us from 3 of the 4 home countries of Great Britain would prefer NOT to share in any celebration with you, given your attitude.

Only 3 home countries not 4. You need to widen your definition if you want to include Northern Ireland.

FWIW, the Canadians came up with Canada Day (1 Jul) relatively recently. It works well - a national outpouring of celebrations at BBQs with Molson beer and similar and no mention of military success or pompous politicians.

Tomorrow is National Day here in Sweden.
It was introduced three years ago to 'rival' Norway's National Day, May 17th, who are experts at flag-waving, patriotism and jingoism.
The day will be sent recovering from a mighty hang-over the day before. Unfortunately though, it's been taken over by the National Party (Svenska Democraterna) as a day of showing their 'love' of the country by having violent anti everything-decent celebrations. [V][:(!]
As for me, I'm off for a 60 mile ride in what will be baking hot weather (28 +). [8D]

    I get knocked down . . . but I get up again . . .

I hate 'days', why do we constantly have to have this day and that day. Is there even a day left in the year that isn't 'something' day?

You know, you are allowed to ignore the ones that don't interest you...

As for Shakespeare day, as he was born, and died on St George's Day, I think that one is already loaded with meaning...

Since any new holiday would just be another reason for many people to flock to B and Q or Meadowhall or whatever, and then spend the evening binge drinking, I don't think I'm too bothered about having one...

Except that in Quebec, they also celebrate St. John the Baptist's day (June 24th?), and call that 'La Fete Nationale'.
