Aching Feet

I'm a newbie and have been riding a road bike now for about two weeks !
I get about 5 miles into my ride and then the outer sides of my feet start aching ??
This is the first time I have ever used clipless pedals, so I'm not too sure whether these aches are just virgin pains ??
Is this the norm with new shoes etc etc ???

Could be your shoes Dearo, could be you ?
Perhaps your shoes are too tight ? Perhaps you are pressing outwards without realising.
I found i bunched my toes and couldnt relax my feet when i first went clipless...bloomin awful.
If you think thats the case, be concious of it while youre riding..and relax your feet..make yourself do it, you'll just do it without thinking after a while.
Chill out, fer Christsakes....

now you come to mention it, i think i had this when i first started with clipless, just on one foot. it was usually after i'd done about 14 mile and i don't get it now tho and i can't remember how many weeks it lasted for. i'd forgotten all about it until i just read this. i didn't do anything to "fix" it, i think i just got used to it, so i can't really offer you much advice (why have a bothered replying at all, i'm not sure, except now you know it's happened to someone else)

I had that problem when I switched to a new pair of Nike shoes a few years back. I was advised (on this forum) that I'd probably got them too tight and that did seem to be the case. I usually loosen then off as a ride progresses and my feet swell (when it's warm) and don't suffer too much at all.
Very nice, very tastefulYou hear that? He's up there... mewing in the nerve centre of his evil empire. A ground rent increase here, a tax dodge there? he sticks his leg in the air, laughs his cat laugh... and dives back down to grooming his balls!0 -
Had this problem for years - then switched from red to black Look cleats on advice from LBS. Huge improvement.0

I'm curently using red delta cleats.
Apart from the colour, what is the difference between red and black cleats ??
Please excuse my ignorance !!

Black ones don't have any 'float' - so you cant move your feet around at all, without them unclipping.0

Martin,
It'll be a case of just getting used to clipless pedals, my new ones are LOOK Keo Sprints with grey cleats 4.5 degrees of float, and I'm noticing it in my knees, previously on the red deltas with 9 degrees of float no problems.
How's the Spesh going, apart from the sore feet issue? Hopefully you are stil taking good care of her[:D][;)]

I have this problem too...and I use toeclips, so it may well be physical as much as pedals etc. It only affects the outer part of my right foot, and I find that occasionally adjusting the position of my foot on the pedal and consciously pulling up my foot on the upstroke (ooo er missus[8D] ) does alleviate it. (Edited for spelling mistakes)

I have this problem ,depending on which shoes I wear, which makes new shoes a nightmare. The cure for me seems to be Specialised BG insoles which seemed to do the trick-if the outside of your foot hurts it could be because the rest of your foot is badly supported ,so the pressure goes on the outside of your foot. You need to go to a Specialised dealer to get the insoles as there are 3 different sorts depending on the height of your arch, and they cost about œ25.0

Dearo, my feet are telling me that you might regret that!
I bought a pair of Shimano road SPD shoes a few weeks ago. I'd been warned that the sizing was small so I ordered 45s instead of my usual 44s. When they arrived, one look at them told me that they were still obviously on the small side. They felt tight across the toes, but I thought they might stretch with use - in fact, I thought to myself I "<i><b>will grin and bear it for a while and see how it goes</b>!</i>"... I did a 2 hour ride wearing them, followed by a 3 hour ride a few days later. Result - my feet still ache and feel numb over 3 weeks later [xx(].
Please don't risk making the same mistake with <i>your</i> feet - they shouldn't ache after only 5 miles, something is wrong and needs sorting out!
No, Man <b><i>is</i></b> an island!0 -
Thanks Colin J !
May look at alternative insoles as notsoracyrich advised ?

Mr. Flint Sir !
The Spesh is cool at the moment and she is as clean as a whistle, although any tips would be gratefully appreciated as I believe my cleaning is not on par with yours.
Which cleaning products did you use ?? or was it the case of a lot of elbow grease ???
