London to Brighton

For some stupid reason I agreed to do this ride with my colleagues. Their plan for getting back involves a coach ride back with the bikes in the storage space under the coach! Now if I was riding a bike that cost œ200 rather than œ2000 this would be fine, but as it is the other way around, it isn't.

I know you can't get trains back from Brighton, but is there another station within 20-30 miles that I could cycle to which would take me back to London?

Any other suggestions?

Use a cheap bike for the day, that way it will be less hard to keep slow.
  • the stations are harsh for this ride, they should put on a special service for us cyclists.

bring back the old style slam door trains with the parcel carriages!!

I would if I actually owned one! I'm cursed with only storage space for one bike.

I think the nearest station that uses a different train provider is Hastings, around 35 miles away!

I might as well cycle home really. It turns the day into a bit of an epic really. Not sure if I can be bothered with crawling all the way there at 0.5mph to only have to get home at 9pm.

IIRC - The whole London-Brighton line is non-bike on that day (which is really helpful). As Cyclingnut says, you would have to ride along the coast to find a station with a London service not going up the Brighton line.

my mate and i are planning on doing this unaided (ie not with a tour or anything) is there any reason why you cant get the bike back on the train or is just that specific day?

Turn around and cycle home is easier.

I've done it a couple of times (also a "with colleagues" thing), but some time ago, and there were special trains then.

How about van hire? (might work if there are enough of you).

Think it was 3 years ago when me and me mate did it and even though we had train tickets and cycle reservations, were turned away by rent-a-thug bouncers at the station, apparently a near riot ensued later when more cyclists turned up and the police had to be called![B)]
