My beginner Surrey hills ride

Seem to be a few Surrey people on the forums, so here is the ride I did on Saturday.

This was my first effort at anything that could be described as a "hill". Lots of roadies coming the other way. I would a have stood out from the crowd as the slightly portly bloke without proper cycling gear - no jersey, SPD-SL, helmet, but these will be coming soonish.

I put the start of the ride on a main roundabout in Woking, which makes it exactly 20 miles, though the roads just there are very bumpy and the ride doesn't really start until Send Road.

Planning to sign up for an organised metric century in September, building up gradually.

Nice - if you want to add more hills, head south through Shere down Hounds House Road (gentle climb) until you desend and go down into Ewhurst. Take it easy first time on the desent as it is fast in sections.
Then turn right onto the B2127 in Ewhurst and then turn right immediately in Cranleigh. Go past St Josephs School and then start taking some deep breaths as you head up Barhatch Lane... Climb up into Winterfold and rejoin Hounds House Road back to Shere (or navigate to Farley Green then Albury to rejoin your route). The Barhatch climb has a steep section that will really get your blood pumping!
Be warned, the Winterfold road to Farley green (Row Lane) is really rough if you decide to go that way.

Thanks a lot for that, I'll try it soon, sounds like a nice little extra challenge to keep me progressing. Hope I don't have to walk up the steep bit.

There's no shame in walking the steep section so long as you give it a really good try and get a bit further each time. I saw several walking it a few years back when the Surrey 'Tour of the hills' went up it.

Well, I've just plotted it and judging by the elevation profile it looks like quite a step up from my 20 miles - exactly 30 miles if rejoining Hounds House Road back to Shere, then back to Woking via my original route. If I can't make it up the hill it will be a good ride to do as I'll have a specific target to reach, surely a good way to improve. Thanks again.
