This might not be the right forum, but somebody here will know the answer to this -

What is the music used for ITV's Tour de France tv coverage, that is presented by Gary Imlach?

I need it for my ipod when I tackle the Pyrenees this summer.

  • This has been asked before I'm sure but for the life of me can't remember what it is. For some reason I have a recollection that it was written by Pete Shelley of Buzzcocks fame.

    I can't remember either, but I downloaded it sometime ago and can e-mail it to you if you like; it's only 32 secs long and the file size is 570Kb.

    I knew this would happen. Nah,,,,,,,,,it's OK. Dare I say I've also got the old theme tune as well? Still can't remember where the hell I got 'em from.
    I've sent the file to all who have asked so far, but if there's going to be a deluge....request it from those to whom I've sent (? grammar?).

    Lets see if we can settle this once and for all. We need a complete back catalogue with recordings etc. I will contribute this from 1990:

    http://www.oujmik.110mb.com/tourdefrance1990.rm

    Needs Real Player or equivalent.

    Is this the one by Carter USM? Always made me think of 'Frere Jacques' and add on a 'dormez vous' at the end. :-)

    Edit: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carter_USM The song was 'Surfing USM' and was used by Channel 4 in 1991, so not sure if this 1990 tune is it? Fruitbat from Carter USM went on to form a band called Abdoujaparov.

    <Sad git mode on>
    The 1990 theme posted above was by Pete Shelly of Buzzcocks fame as mentioned before. It was a take on a track called "Give it to me" which (I believe) was first issued on the B side of his excellent single "Never Again". It was also included as an album track on a Pete Shelley solo album "Heaven And The Sea". After Buzzcocks reformed it was included again as an album track on their 1996 Album "All Set" but this time without the synthesizer stuff just Pete and Steve Diggle thrashing their guitars along with Phil Barker on Drums and Tony Barber on bass. Saw Buzzcocks (again) a few weeks ago - still very very good <Sad git mode off>

    I'm almost in tears after that little beauty. One of the most important features of my teenage life, sitting down to that opening theme. *sniff* [^]

    Yeah, it is a good one. It has a strangely subconcious effect on me, as I don't actually remember watching the tour that long ago (I think I was only on my second bike in 1990...), but the music definitely touches some memory. I could make an mp3 from the .rm file if you like, but the quality is pretty poor... would be good if someone could unearth the original.

  • Yep same same. I just remember warm summer evenings, coming to the end of the school year and watching the TDF highlights on 4. What time did they show it? 1830? And to think that slot is now occupied by that awful soap they call Hollyoaks haha.

    It's all good...

    BTW JonSkids - I found a site that has a 12" copy of Pete Shelley 'Never again' with 'Give it to me' on the B side.
