Well I got that Raleigh Record Ace 531 frame built up on saturday night (exciting weekend!) and took it for a spin on Sunday afternoon. I was well impressed - easily a kilo or more lighter than the pompino (albeit without a rear brake, mudguards and a schmidt dynohub/lights) so it felt quicker and definitely a bit more comfortable. Thanks to 700c wheels in 27 1/2" frame, there is bugger all toe overlap, even with toeclips on - will have to check if this is still the case with mudguards though.

It's even more impressive when you consider the Raleigh has cost not much over œ200 (note the slightly higher figure below after breaking it down!) - and that's with only the cranks as a parts bin donation, most parts are brand new or barely used.

Breakdown as follows:

Raleigh Record Ace frameset (complete with brank new Tektro calipers, good headset and colour matched mudguards!) - œ45 local ebay collection.
Wheelset - œ85 (Front shimano ultegra @ œ30 and rear built by LBS onto On one hub and CXP33 rim @ œ55 - all brand new)
GB Randonneur Bars and stem - œ25 from someone on here
Shimano 170mm double Crankset - freebie from another forummer
MKS GR-9 Pedals - œ17
Chainring & sprocket - œ13
KMC cheapo 1/8" chain (seems nicer than a PC-1 mind) - œ6
BMX brake lever - œ12
Saddle and seatpost - œ23
Tyres (Vittoria Rubinos) & Tubes - œ20
Deda bar tape - œ6

œ252 total - but so much more pimpin' than the œ400-450 odd Pompino.

BTW - these Aero rims, does anyone else get a very slight humming/wind noise type sound from them or am I on crack?
