The univega uses v-brakes which at this price point is ok, as this means you get better 'branded' parts.
the univega looks a whole lot better bike to me, deore shifters, lx mech, avid levers etc
if they are offering it to you for the 279 the mongoose costs, i would take it

I can vouch for Univega (bought a chromo Univega mtb fro my son, lasted several years of hard mixed riding and tour on Lon Las Cymru, superb bike), not seen much in this country, but they are good quality and excellent value for money.
In this particular case, I agree with Steve, the components are much better, and v-brakes are going to be less hassle than an obscure brand of mechanical disc brake.
Mongoose may be a better known brand, but this particular model is a collection of low rent parts.0 -
im surprised as when i first came on these forums everyone one was waxing lyrical about the tyax elite? mentioning the quality of the parts....not sure what to do!!!!0

Univega seems to have better bits, and looks better too [:)]. Go for it!
