Hubs recommendation

Morning all,

I've just donated my cheap and cheerful commuter wheels to the missus' new singlespeed conversion. So now I'm looking to upgrade to a better pair, question is what hubs?

It's only a knackered old Freddie Grubb so a pair of Phil Wood's seem over-kill and Goldtec only do black or pewter finishes (the bike suits silver wheels), so do you guys have any recommendations? I'm looking to spend around œ140 for the pair.

Cheers.

I think on-one are selling their Pomp Pro wheelset seperately now, for 125. Black rims (quite nice), probably silver hubs. I like their stuff.
  • Cheers Smiorgan.

I'm also hearing mixed reports on Suzue ProMax hubs. Anybody had any experience with these?

I've a Miche on the rear of my Condor. I'm happy to recommend.
  • invest in the Phil Woods. the knackered old Freddie Grubb will thank you for them. and then when it is too knackered you already have a lovely set of hubs to build the new bike around.

Surly are great too, they do silver and black models. œ107 the pair in Brixton.

Phil Woods for Fixies and or SS or Chris King for SS only.

You will never regret buying them.

There are also some very good internet resources to buy from the US at great prices.

*newbie type question* what is so great about Phil Wood hubs? What is it about them that justifies the price?

    (I'm œ30 on-one jobbies BTW)
  • Nothing that you can't get in a British-made Royce hub, at a not dissimilar price when you allow for import duty and VAT (and the Royce hubs are far more aesthetically pleasing, to my eye at least).
  • Thanks for all your input guys (and pehaps gals)?

I think I'm going to go with the Miche ones. I spoke to a couple of couriers on the way in this morning and they recommend them for a courier or commute build on a budget.

Seeing as it is only my commuting hack I think I'll keep the money I'm going to save and put it towards a custom steel build I want to buy myself for Xmas!

    Cheers

Only thing with Miche is that the lockrings and axle hardware are both low quality and italian threaded so the only replacements are campy (œœœœœ).

If you wanna spend that kind of money then formula/ambrosio/system EX are a bit cheaper and use standard threading so you can replace bits (locknuts, tracknuts, lockrings) much more easily if you need to. I think that quality is about the same as Miche.

Suzue ProMax are meant to be pretty good mid range hubs, only thing is that they only come in fixed/free.

I'm not sure a Campag lockring would fit on a Miche hub, I tried a Miche lockring on a Campag hub and it didn't fit.

IMO Phil Wood hubs are completely overrated, any idiot can make "bombproof" stuff if they're very expensive, ridiculously overbuilt and weigh a ton, and they're bleeding ugly as well.

I'm using a sealed bearing Suzue Promax hub at the back, I love it. It looks great, and is tough enough to have lasted 3-4000 miles on London's potholes without a whimper.

Phils look nice, but I still prefer mine.
  • goldtec are great also, and british

Miche hubs takes standard lockrings - not Italian thread. I've got one pair that've lasted a good few years in all seasons with virtually no maintenance - better than the Formula/system-X ones which need new bearings after just over a year - and I'm not heavyweight. Suzue went bust so get the hubs whilst you can.
