Yep, I'm a 'villain (Charlotteville member) but don't go out too much on Sunday's April - June as I'm usually doing sportives. There was another 'villain on the long route but I didn't catch his name and I didn't recognise him. It's a nice club, very friendly. Real mix of standards.

I went out with a mate of mine who is a much, much better cyclist than me (sub 22 10, sub hour 25) but he had a bad day. He's not done too much distance stuff this year and he reckoned it was down to that. I'm sure the heat and humidity (and wind) didn't help. Pity really 'cos it was nice meeting him for a bike ride.

Polka Dot next weekend then the Maratona July 1. I don't know why I do these things as I'm crap at hills.

Looking forward to Ronde Picardie in September which is same distance as Sunday but 1500m ascent so really just undulating.

I was riding this as my second ever sportif and longest ride. My official time was 8hr 1min something which was inside silver standard but I was gutted because I sprinted up the drive at the end to get under 8 hrs and thought I had made it. I left at 0903 on my watch and got in at 1702. But the bleeper doesn't lie I suppose so I'll just have to take it on the chin.

Actually, she does have a sister but her brother in-law's 6'2", 15 stone and built like a brick outhouse so probably not a good idea to invite her to go for a ride in the country with you.

  • Did anyone actually record how much altitude was gained during the day? The official website said 2500 metres of climbing but I don't think we did anything near that. The only steep hill was the one up to Combe Gibbet (Walbury Hill) and after that it was mainly rolling with the odd hill thrown in.

I did the GF Felice Gimondi in May, which has 2600 metres of climbing, and it was way harder.

You won't be saying that after 7 July ;-) I know, 'cos I certainly wasn't. Anyway good luck and I hope it's not too hot on the day.

My Garmin 205 / Tracklogs log recorded it as 2528m climbing. But I agree it didn't feel that much.

My Garmin 305 logged it as 2065m of ascent. Not sure how accurate the figures are, I rode the Grand Fondu Cymru(105 mile course) and it logged 2607m whilst the organisers said about 3600m. If Highclere was 2065m then GFC felt like about 4000m.

  • I have it as 2362m. Dont know how accurate that is as the Ergomo was being a bit temparamental on Sunday.

Well, I only did the weenies 74 miler, so my 305's altitude recording doesn't really count! (Will edit and post later).

*If you download the tracklog from your 305 in to motionbased, then it will altitude correct it, if you select that option.
Good to see some comparable stats for the same route though.

I have "calibrated" mine by riding out on a route and riding back exactly the same way much later in the day - It's normally accurate to within 10 ft. (Query whether zooming downhill causes an erroneous air pressure reading).

Really impressed you guys were all still together at the top of the hill! Nice club kit too!
Hmm.. Do I join Charlotteville at the bottom of the hill, or commute to KW?!
I have to say, I've met more Wheelers out and about than any other club.
It's just the though of riding out to Kingston, only to ride back down towards Guildford!

Edit: Cripes, I'm the one wearing the comedy party hat: Walbury P.26, photo 2 [:D]

Good excuse for another purchase this week!
I'm having a competition with my boss as to who can lose the most money to their hobby - I think I'm winning - only he rides a motorbike!

Fair point - Not really measured it - Oh, OK I just googled it - a short 25 mile TT [:p]
I could be totally sacrilegious and use the train!
Dang! I still think of Kingston as just around the corner - We used to live the other side of the park.
I've been commenting recently on returning to SPDs and spending my time lying upside-down in ditches - Second time with SPDs in the last 5 years was that ride - Was therefore amused to be given rider number 609.

    Oh dear...

Just looked on the website. Walbury Hill page 4, middle row second from right and on the rhs of photo. Hardly flattering. Mind you, the guy on my right (left in 'photo) in the red jersey seems to be in real pain judging by his expression !

  • I like the skull cycling shirt where did you get it?
JWSurrey-If you look at it this way its only once a week for the clubrun do the shorter one as you've already done 25miles there and back.
