brakes - aero levers on old weinmanns
hi all
just getting a lovely old early 80s raleigh (fake) TI together but wanted to modernise the brakes - get rid of the horrible suicide levers.
so have some secondhand modolo levers. however, when connecting them to the old weinmann (730) calipers i find to have them giving me full stopping power the levers are very hard to pull. and nigh on impossible if you are riding on the hoods.
just wondering if i have missed a trick.
any help much appreciated.

It may be worth getting a complete new brake set. I assume you have friction shifters, so getting a set of non STI/Ergo brakes might not cost too much. See the pic of my old 80's Raleigh 531 below. It's got an old set of Shimano 105 brakes.

thanks Bianchi Boy,
i like your raleigh btw. i have not sti/ergo levers - it's just i can't adjust them to feel light and smooth with the old weinmann calipers. i was hoping to use the weinmanns rather than getting more modern brakes.
cheers anyway,

There's no immediate reason why aero levers should not work with 730s. However, those callipers do give much poorer braking than modern ones.
If you do consider replacing them, make sure you know what brake drop you need (distance from pivot bolt to brake blocks). 730s are quite deep and you might find only Alhongas work as a replacement.0
