Thigh Muscles

I was struggling up one particular hill today and the burning sensation in my thigh muscles was ubearable (good job no-one was in earshot) but I kept going and the pain started to fade. Is this supposed to happen or did the nerves in my legs just give up and die?!!

Part of getting fitter, probably the biggest part, is realising that all these feelings you are experiencing do not mean you're going to die. What now seems unbearable in time gets to be something that is easily ignored. Of course then you will find that you can push harder again.

You pushed through the pain!0

Pain was probably dulled from the endorphins released by the exercise, that's why people get hooked on exercise!0

burning sensation = lactic acid

Lactic acid (lactate) is not:
responsible for the burn in the leg muscles when exercising very fast
responsible for the soreness you experience in the 48 hours following a hard session <hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></blockquote id="quote"></font id="quote">
Not that, that helps with your pain.

Well the "unbearable" was probably just me being a whimp [:D] and I think it was the lactic acid. It wasn't the pain that worried me so much as the easing off while I was still pushing up the hill. Guess it was those wonderful endorphines kicking in - gotta love 'em!0

hmm if your ham string has snapped or strained a muscle and you continue exercise you're a bit daft. Did your muscles "go hard" and twitch? I had that a while ago whilst cycling. Annoying a painful.

Nothing a bad as a ham string I am glad to say and I don't think it was a strained muscle as it was a burning sensation and all was ok when I got home and today - the muscles just feel as though they have been worked hard. Mind you that was what did worry me - whether I had overworked them too much.0

The muscle pain after abnormally vigourous exercise is a condition called DOMS, delayed onset muscle soreness. There is no real answer as to why it occurs although there are theories that it is caused by mass muscle fibre tearing on a microscopic scale. There is also a theory that it is caused by a vitamin/mineral deficiency in your muscles although this seems less likely.
As for the burning sensation it is almost definitely lactic acid. The fact that you were busting a gut uphill and therefore almost definitely exercising anaerobically points to lactic acid build up. Anaerobic exericse causes Lactic acid production and acts as a poison to slow you down.
It is definitely not your nerves giving up on you as if they were you wouldn't be able to walk as nerves rarely regenerate.
Hope this helps and as somebody else replied, the more you ride the easier it will get.https://www.bikeauthority.cc/
