My hybrid bike cassette is a midget among cassettes. Can i take it off and pop on say an MTB 11-30 (8 speed) without any probs or will the mech/shifters object? The rear mech is one of those newer types with slightly oversized jockey wheels. What are the differences between road/MTB rear mechs BTW.

Cheers

If you're swapping an 8 speed for an 8 speed you should be ok, *but* only if your derailleur cage is the right length.

The difference between road and MTB mechs is the length of the cage (the bit the jockey wheels sit in).

As MTB bikes generally have bigger cassettes and triples the cage is longer as it has to be able to accommodate a bigger range of chain slack than most road gearing.

Do you know what your rear mech is? If the bike is a hybrid and you have a triple it's probably got a long-cage mech.

If your cassette is *really* small you might also need a slightly longer chain if you put a bigger one on.
