Shimano Compacts

Hi guys,

Are there any notable differences between the Shimano 4550 and R600 compact chainsets?

I'm thinking about going to a compact setup on my 06 Allez Sport so am I right in thinking that it will be a case of;

Removing the old Tiagra chainset and BB
Putting on the new BB and chainset (new tool reqd)
Lowering the front d‚railleur a little
Shortening the chain slightly

Is there anything else glaringly obvious I need to do, get or be aware of for this task?

Oh also is this the tool needed to put the new BB on and Crank?

    and

Will any Shimano Hollowtech 2 BB be suitable for either chainsets? (its that that the 105 BB is cheaper than the tiagra).

I don't know what the differnces are, other than weight

Your summary of the work required looks right - but you will also have to adjust the cable for the front mech. I didn't shorten the chain and didn't have any problems.

That tool is for tightening the dustcap in the non-drive side crank. You will also need a tool for the new BB; the crank itself installs with an allen key.

Park Tool do a tool for the BB which also incorporates the dustcap thingy.

if the bb shell has not been faced (both sides) it will need doing.

this is the tool to get http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... delID=4062 it included the tool you linked to at the small end of the spanner.

  • THere is no difference between these two chainsets bar one: the 4550 is for 9 speed and the 600 is for 10 speed. However, you can use the 4550 for 10 speed if you are careful - basically the 10 speed chain may drop in between the chainrings in certain combinations, but you can avoid this by making sure you are in the larger rear sprockets before shifting down to the small 34 chainring. Shifting up to the large chainring in any sprocket is fine however. Price difference between the two units is variable, but Parkers-International have the best prices.

Oh right thanks for the info. I'm on a 9 speed 105 at the rear so I guess based on cost and ease I'd be better off going with the Tiagra chainset.

Is there any difference in Shimano bottom brackets between 9 & 10 speed as I've noticed that a 105 10 BB is often the same if not cheaper than the Tiagra BB. I would've thought they'd be the same but best check first.
  • Go to your LBS and have them fitted It is NOT an easy job to correctly as even and correct torques are required to endure a good fit. BB Shell on bike may also need facing.
