Any owners manage to fit full mud guards?.Guy at Edinburgh Bicycle Coop reckons they could 'bodge' something up on the rear but advised me to stick to the Raceblades I have on now.
Cheers

  • Hi, I have a Sequoia Elite and full mudguards fit fine this is why you need deep drop brakes for the frame, I have black full guards that I have taken off for summer use but will be back on again come the winter months. This frame is a touring style frame hence the higher headtube and all the bosses for racks and extra bottles
    Hope this helps

How is the rear guard attached as there are no holes in the drop-outs to take a screw?.
    Cheers for the reply
  • If its the elite it has carbon dropouts? if so it looks like a hollow screw attching them to the main alloy stays these are threaded and take the mudguard screws, I will go and take a photo and hopefully its the exact same model
  • Complete frame just to check its the same (not standard kit as I built it to myself to my own spec)

Showing where the screws go for the mudguards as I said before I have removed them for the summer

You know,I mentioned this 'bolt' to the guy at Edinburgh Bicycle Coop and his response was to say it would weaken the 'connection' between seatstay and drop-out if the guard-stay was attached there. He started talking about using clips instead and also seemed to have doubts about where to attach up at the brake caliper !.I really don't want a bodge job so it may be best to contact Specialized for instructions/diagram as this is obviously a do-able thing.I have Race Blades on at the moment but only used this bike Spring/Summer/Autumn and they were fine.I now have only one bike so really would prefer full guards that were able to come off and on easily.
    Thanks again for your input.
  • Yeah np check with specialized but this is the mount point as this is also used for a rack mount too, its a clever design where is a hollow bolt that has an external thread to join the carbon stay to the main stay and has internal thread for the rack/mudguards

If it helps click here then click specification it states rack and fender brazeons

I have contacted them via the link so will await a reply.
Just back in from a lovely 31mile run around the wee back roads outside Edinburgh.Sun shining [at last] and only 'light' winds [at last!!],sheer bliss[:)].I am constantly amazed that this Sequoia is actually as comfy on the road as the hybrid bike I have just sold.
    Cheers,
    John.
  • Hi pictit, did you get a reply from Specialized ?
  • Hi Pictit

I've an elite and when planning lejog was also worried about connecting my rack to this hollow threaded bolt on the carbon stay - the lbs checked with specialized and it's exactly as as50215 describes - it's designed for rack/mudguards - I did 1050 miles with the rack quite heavily loaded without any problems. Apparently all the strength on the carbon to chain stay connection is from the bonding, not this bolt. Hope that reassures you.
