Mixing SRAM chain with Shimano Cassette??
I need a new chain & cassette for my Giant Escape commuter after 6000 miles. I've noticed today that one of the links has almost disintegrated. The current set up is a Shimano 8 speed HG30 cassette and HG50 chain.
Merlin cycles currently have a good deal on a HG50 cassette for œ9.95. However they don't stock HG chains.
Is it ok to use this with an SRAM PC58 8 speed chain œ9.95?
Will the gear changes be as smooth with this combination and will there be even wear?
Also what's the opinion on SRAM power-link? Thanks

I use a SRAM PC58 8 speed chain with Shimano on my RSP. It works fine.

Yep, work fine for me.0

No problems. I find SRAM chains last much longer than Shimano.

My SRAM PC48 also lasts longer than the cheap shimano equivalent IG-30/50? I'm converted to SRAM for chains. The convenience of powerlinks is a blessing for chain cleaning.0

Thanks, I placed an order with Merlin for the HG70 and PC58 yesterday afternoon (œ27.50 deal). The order has already arrived by Royal Mail.

What methods are used for cleaning a detached chain?
I read in a previous thread that soaking it in a bucket of white spirits or degreaser wasn't advised as it removes the manufacturer's lubrication between the links etc.0 -
I wouldnt degrease a brand new chain, but once a clean is due, then I'd have no qualms for rinsing it in white spirit, followed by a fresh lube.
I normally scrub it first using the barberi chain cleaner tool. Then open the powerlink and rinse and shake in a glass jar containing spirit. Then wipe and hang to dry. Followed by dunk in tub of chainsaw oil, leave to bubble for a few mins. Then hang to drip off excess overnight. Ready to use next morning.0 -
PC48's or 58's are fine with HG50 or HG70 cassettes. Powerlinks are great, much better idea than the Shimano once-only joining pin.
When your SRAM chain wears out and you buy another, keep the powerlinks and carry in case of emergency chain repair.
Time to dig-out the Summer bike (why's it just started raining ? Is it something I said ?)0
