Hi All

Well I've been commuting from Dartford to Greenwich and then jumping on a train the rest of the way for a few weeks. Now I am a bit fitter [:D] and want to save some extra time in mornings I want to cycle the whole way but don't know whether to use the Greenwich Foot Tunnel or just go round the slightly longer way through Bermondsey and over London/Tower Bridge. I want the quickest with minimal hassles so that may rule out the foot tunnel but would appreciate any thoughts. I am finishing in Moorgate if that helps.

Cheers

Jimbo

I go from Dartford to London and just go through Greenwich, deptford, Bermondsey then into westminster finishing off at The Strand.
If you like I can take you my route and you can follow me?

The joy with cycling is that you can easily try a bunch of different routes and accurately compare the distance and journey time, since they will be largely unaffected by vehicular traffic.

I would come up through Surrey Quays, along Jamaica Road then cross Tower Bridge if I were you.

Or stay below the river and pop up closer so less of the journey is thru The City.

I do Greenwich to the City every day

The foot tunnel/Cable St is the nicer route Distance is just over 8 miles and takes about 45 mins

The Lower Road route I only use if I'm late or it's after 7pm so the lifts in the Tunnel are closed. Distance about 7 miles and my PB is 29 mins

There is also the regents park canal route - about 45 mins

Cheers for the replys. Tried via Surrey Quays this morning and ended up on Wallworth Rd!!! Still the way home should be easier.

Will try Docklands route next week.

    Thanks again

    Hiya Jimbo

I commute from Blackheath to the City, via Greenwich. If you leave Greenwich village on Creek Road and stay on that road through Deptford and Rotherhithe, bearing left at the roundabout near the Rotherhithe Tunnel, you'll end up at Tower Bridge - I'd recommend turning off onto Tooley Street (right) before you get to Tower Bridge Road (it's a bus and cycle only turning on a set of traffic lights, as there's 'no right turn' onto Tower Bridge Road.

It's a very busy route, but there's bus lanes/cycles lanes pretty much throughout. Blackheath to Liverpool St in 30-35 mins depending on luck with the lights...

Used to live on the Isle of Dogs and the route along Cable St is quite nice - one-way traffic (not that busy) and a cycle lane (when they're not digging the thing up [:(!]). Was about 20-25 mins from Island Gardens, but of course then you've got the walk through the tunnel.

Enjoy the whichever route you settle on...

Creek Road, Evelyn Street, Jamaica Road, Tooley Street then right over London Bridge is deffo the best way to go.

I go that way every day, give me a wave I`ll be the brown bloke on the white Condor/Omega/Bianchi depending on the weather [8D]

not like you and proud of it

What time do you aim to leave most morning's Jimbo? also do you go up via Bexleyheath and Crayford or do you go down via Thames road and through Slade Green?

Usually 6.45/7 going via shooters hill but I have to admit it is hard going up Crayford hill as well as Shooters so am thinking of doing this route. It looks like half the climb on the elevation plan.

Yeah same as my route but I can make that even flater and easier for early morning runs, Give or take Traffic I can get into the city within an hour and 15 minutes.
Do you leave that early as it takes you some time to get up both hills?

It took me 1 hour 45 mins on Friday night to get home with not much stopping. I think it is a combination of the hills and lack of fitness still. I'd be interested to know how you could get the route flatter than above. I need to be at my work by 8.30 for shower and brekky.

    Easy,
Instead of Going Left at the Erith Roundabout, go straight on down Bronze age Way, take the first Exit off to Lower Belvedere. Take the left there and follow the road all the way to Abbeywood. After going round the left hand corner at Abbeywood station take the right at the round about, follow that road all the way to the end you will hit traffic lights, that is the bottom of Bostal woods Hill. From there you should know your way from there to Greenwich then into town. It should be nice and quick this week as the kids are at school. what do you ride and I'll keep an eye out for you.

    Hey

Tried it this morning and got lost a few times early on (ended up on a 50mph road with juggernauts trying to play conkers). It is definately flatter but not sure if it is worth it for the extra 2 miles and much busier roads than I am used to. Think I may stick with hills to get me fitter in the short term as well. The way home looked like it would be worse as well with even more traffic and the areas you go through but I will try again on Friday morning I think.

the only time you will see trucks at any speed is on Bronze Age way, and with the hill before it you can reach around 30mph anyway so you can pretty much keep up with them until the first turn off
