The OP reads as if young drivers are behind everything that is wrong on the roads. Is this accidental or is the poster really that blinkered and prejudiced?

Hypocrisy is only a bad thing in other people.

Not wanting to dwell on the point of speed cameras any further, you can accept that the point I'm making regarding them and Drink Drivers is a valid one marinyork ?
    <hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></blockquote id="quote"></font id="quote">

Well it would be if you could back up your suggested theory that policing of the roads has given way to safety cameras.

I notice that you haven't yet.

A good thing, surely? At least SLOWER! 30-40 years ago, as long as no cop cars about, drunk and speeding was the norm for youngsters (believe me).

Having just returned to m'cycling, I keep a VERY close eye on the speedo whereas in the old days as long as no jam sandwiches about +5 mph in the RIGHT place not a worry. In fact, that concentration on the clock, at the price of less observation, the only downside of cameras of which I can think. A cop wouldn't have pulled me for 45 in a 40 at say 6 a.m. on a Sunday - a camera will!

I was also very good at telling the officers what they wanted to hear and they were soon sending "Nigel Mansell" on his way with just a caution. Cameras just take the negotiation skills out of it.

Clean as a whistle thanks. Due to lack of road police nowadays and the fact that the cameras are bright yellow and stand out a mile you would have to be a fool to have points on your license.

Youth (or rather the lack of experience that goes with youth) does impart a sense of imortality on people. It certainly did on me, that's why I used to smoke, take drugs and wrote off two cars within a year of passing my driving test.
Its not surprising kids drink and drive more, they have more money to spend on drink and more cars to drive when they've been drinking. There's only one way to get it under control and that's to pump them full of hard hitting information on what the risks are of drunk or drugged up driving are and to ensure we have effective ways of policing the roads to catch anyone trying to do so. Even then a large percentage won't have a clue about the reality 'til it happens to them or someone they know.

Mine too. With fate duly tempted, 42 years this August - though I rather suspect that if I keep the bigger of my 2 Yamahas that won't last!

I don't know about road policing giving way to cameras but traffic police numbers have fallen nationally.

Just use your eyes Mister Paul. It is very clear that the number of police seen on the roads is much lower than it was 20 years ago.

Although maybe the number of police cars on the road is similar, but the ratio of police car to private cars is lower?

Just a thought - I don't know the actual figures.

No, I mean the total number of police cars. Rarely see them these day, whereas 20 years ago I was forever shaking them off my tail (yes I was in Dukes of Hazzard)

So why is it that if there is an incident of any kind half a dozen police cars turn up. Wouldn't it be better if 1 attended and did what was necessary while the other 5 went around breatalising young drivers?

Maybe it is more fun for them to attend incidents.

It does seem that way. I've seen 'em on those TV programs about Traffic Police, they turn up, try to get a good look at what's been going on, fanny about trying to look useful and eventually realise that everything is under control and they could be off nicking joy riders.

No, what I'm saying is that younger people are less in touch with their mortality and do take risks which more experienced (older) people are less inclined to do.

Its usually a serious accident by them or one of their mates which brings it home, and then they think a bit more and take less risks !

    <b><font color="red">Young pimply chav </font id="red"></b>@ 18 years of age = œ1500+ 3rd party, fire & theft or a refusal to quote.

Older more experienced driver = œ250 fully comp

Says it all really doesn't it !
    <hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></blockquote id="quote"></font id="quote">

If this is your view of all younger people, and you have made it quite clear it is, you really are a particularly blinkered person. People like you will always see a 'chav' whenever they see a young person in a car. I would put good money on you distancing yourself from responsibility by categorising anyone who does something you don't like into a group that excludes you. It's very easy to vilify lots of people this way.
