Turned out fine as you know.
I attempted to ride it but was stopped after about 4 ks. My brief report with pics here http://letour2007latest.blogspot.com/0 -

The cameras made the climb look steep...so they must be awful in reality.....just shows you how good the top pro's are...I never seen Simoni wince at all on the entire climb....I really fancy having a pop at this...I'd arm myself with my trusty triple sporting a lowest gear of 30x27...its never let me down so far....this could be the let down!
Funny you should compare it to 8 x winnats...thats the climb I reckoned it would be most like...pretty constant suffering without the mad gradients of Hardknott/Rosedale/Park Rash etc 30+%...
Fancy it in 2 years time...next year I want to have a pop at the Mortirolo/Gavia/Stelvio...that'll tell me how I'll fair on the Zoncolan...not too much difference from the Mortirolo....
Steepest climb I've did abroad is Portet Aspet/Pla D'Adet...but I did have a gear to spare...Think i'll need the extra gear for the Uber Climbs....Mortirolo/Angliru/Zoncolan0 -

I've done the Stelvio, from both sides, previously. I did the north side with a bottom gear of 39x26! Oh the folly of youth! [;)]0 -

They look positively wimpy in the profile on the site - Do you think you'll need to get out of your big ring?

AndyP,
The Gran Fondo Marco Pantani!.....I reckon you've still got a few follies of youth left yet mate[:)] When I have a pop at those monsters i assure it will be one per day[xx(]0 -
I rode the Mortirolo from both sides yesterday (as Gavia was shut due to snow and had to back track).
Seriously...I don't know what the fuss is about, "Lance's hardest climb" and all that...don't think so.
It's perfectly reasonable, I could spin up lots of it. Totally unlike the Zoncolan which is in a completely different league, I could barely turn the pedals.
Hopefully the Stelvio is open again today.....I drove up the 48 hairpins the other day in a snow storm.....what a road !0 -

Maybe Le Patron you were just on a very good day, any climb which is 12kms long and averages 10.5% is one hell of a serious undertaking...Don't think the Mortirolo would match the Angliru or Zoncolan in terms of difficulty but it certainly outshines any other climb i've seen in a grand tour...The steepest suffering I've did abroad is the 1st 7km's of Pla D'Adet..I reckon that would average 10.5%...or the 10km Forest section up Ventoux from Bedoin...so with my reckoning the Mortirolo will give my arse a good kicking[B)]
I still however reckon I'd give the Zoncolan a good go with the triple...0 -
Maybe, or maybe it was built up too much in my head.
Seemed similar to l'Alpe d'Huez to me, same height gain, almost same distance, just a little steeper.
Ventoux, Zoncolan, Hardknott/Wrynose...much harder.0 -

The steep bit of the Zoncolan doesn't start until 8.5 km from the top, so overall averages are misleading in that respect. The Mortirolo has nasty little 20% ramps that are not pleasant during the heat of a late June afternoon 3/4 of the way through a granfondo, especially if you are trapped behind slower climbers.
