Have just fitted Aksiums to my winter training bike and, having tested them on some awful road surfaces, I'm very impressed with them. They are very stiff and strong, hubs seem nice and smooth, and they look good too. I know a few people with R550s and they are OK but I think that the Aksiums have the edge. BTW, I got mine from Ribble who throw in a set of rim tapes, tubes and Rubino tyres, all for œ99. Plus they are doing 10% off this weekend which basically means free postage.
well, yes and no......but mainly no.

I have a set of 550s and would recomend them, they've taken some big hits and remained true. I must say though they are not as comfy as my Mavic Cosmos wheels on my other bike, I suspect this is down to the rim profile.

My Mavics aka Christine
Since putting the mavics on my bike they have been hit by two cars and survived a head on collision with a kerb, total damage, front wheel need a small tweak to straighten it but apart from that they have survived miraculously well.
I'd buy them again just not the possessed set i own.

I replaced my R550's for Aksiums, good decision on my part, but if you do, just make sure they are silver.

Hmmm personal choice, but I think that the silver ones look better when the sun shines on them as you pedal along[8D]

silver defo!
Especially on a blue and white allez - black would be too dull!!
(by the way have you considered the R560 / R561's instead - wiggle have a good discount on them at the moment - I have the 561's in silver and they are very good wheels!)0 -
I have black 550s but my mates silver look better, but niether are as good as my blue Cosmos on my white and blue Kenesis.

I have black aksiums on my specialized tricross, I've been off road (quite a lot) and hammered them round the streets and they haven't gone out of true at all. I'm a 91 kg rider so I think my endorsment of the wheels should be noted.0
-
I'm a 78kg rider only use mine on tarmac, always ride light when necessary, my rear wheel went out of true after 45 miles, but the LBS sorted it FOC[:D] But I still like my aksiums and, prefer them to the R550's they replaced[;)]

loving the colour scheme debate this has raised !... at first i thought it was me being OTT with my bike requirements, but age & experience should tell me that us cyclists are not just concerned about functionality when it comes to splashing cash on our bikes ! [:D]

just looking at a few pics and wondering if the silver & black have different spokes ie silver trad style spoke and black bladed ...is this so just out of curiosity ?

Dunno, but the silver is defo better looking than the dull black version[;)][8D]

one here for the Aksiums, had mine since Feb and taken quite a few big hits. They're still true, and no flexing when climbing out of the saddle. Best for the money I reckon...0
