Anyone else doing these at the weekend? I'm down to do the 80 mile option. Hope the weather is better than last year.

    I'm doing it.

Never ridden the Dales before. Fleet Moss and then Park Rash at the end aren't looking very pleasant at all!!

The forecast looks OK for the Richmond 5 Dales. Last year the wind was really strong and it was cold. The ride itself is fantastic. I'm doing it again with a few club mates.

I honestly reckon the 5 Dales could be the toughest run in the Dales and should not be underestimated......The climb from Hawes to Fleetmoss is a sore one...it starts with a steep bit then tethers out to a very nice gradient...then it really kicks for around 1.5kms...then the last ramp(25%) really hammers you...Its a much tougher climb from Hawes...PARK RASH - now this climbs the toughest I've did in the Dales...you climb out of Kettlewell at a severe 25%..not very long...the road then fools you then flattens off..your riding actually slightly down hill for a good bit...then you see what awaits you...at the bottom of the gradual descent the road takes a sharp right and kicks right up at 1:3...up this to a sharp left then your on a solid 25% for ages...it levels off a bit then nearing the top kicks back upto around 20% to the summit...A true Killer....this will really test the legs at the end of this run I tell you...I rate Park Rash around the Same as Rosedale Chimney/Boltby Bank....

    So beware!

I'm down to do the 100 mile ride. I did the White Rose Classic last year but have decided to do this one as it is closer to where my parents live.

I have just come back from a week in the alps so I am hoping that I ought to be fit enough for this event.

I don't think I'm going to bother with the racing. I was thinking about it but seeing as it is going to poor with rain all day I have gone off the idea.

    That was tough....

I punctured on the descent from Tan Hill and took about 20 minutes to sort it, then snapped a spoke in Hawes. I'd already decided to take the 80 mile 'shortcut' back through Wensleydale anyway but there was still a gruelling climb in the middle of that as well. Ended up getting off and walking the last third of it cos the rim was rubbing on the brakes under pressure, even with them backed off all the way.

A very enjoyable ride though. I'm well and truly shattered now!

A great day out. I did the 80 mile option too. The climb over to Nateby was hard given the poor road surface and the drag from Nateby over to the Moorcock was a slog. It looked like it was flat for a lot of it but I think it must have been a steady incline (or that was what my legs were telling me!). The leg from Hawes to Leyburn was OK but the ride back to Richmond was a good test of my tired legs.

A great ride - much more pleasant than last year which seemed at times to be into the teeth of a gale. We did the 80 miler - good run, well chosen routes. I am a 'little' tired right now.

I did the 100 for some stupid reason! If you did the 80, you missed the toughest two climbs: Fleet Moss was okay but Park Rash was certainly steeper in parts than the advertised 1/4. And the run-in afterwards was far from 'downhill all the way'. I'm not back to full fitness (and nor was my bike) so I was quite pleased with 7 hours for this beast. Good job from the Richmond crew too - shows that the minimalist model for sportives can work very well indeed. I'll be back.

7:12 for me on the 100 mile route. It very nearly killed me! I suffered from cramp from about the 8th mild onwards and had to keep stopping to stretch it off.

Physically couldn't ride up Park Rash; I just didn't have enough gears.

I am absolutely amazed at the fitness levels of some of the older guys who overtook me! Also the speed of the RichmondCC guys who did it in 5:35, especially the rider who looked more like a rugby second row.

Tell me about it... there's nothing more depressing than some buggers breezing past you with 10 miles to go, who you know started almost an hour after you did!

Mind you if I'd not stopped for lunch and managed to stick with the group I was in, it would have been more like 6.30 for me, which is what I'd usually expect for this kind of ride.

Oddly enough, I feel absolutely fine today...[:D]

Well done to everyone who did this!

Would add my thanks and appreciation to the Richmond boys for an excellent event.
Everything was going well until Mallerstang when severe cramp set in in my right thigh. Couldn't put any pressure down and so had to honk all the time. Almost took 80 option back from Hawes but carried on. Aplogies to all who witnessed me stopped on side of the road swearing in agony. (Flourecent orange Kona with mudguards) Park Rash was really difficult, couldn't sit and pedal and had to keep stopping.
Last 15 miles was a real struggle, couldn't even get up the short easy climb out of Middleham towards Leyburn..stood there for 5 mins making silly faces and cursing!
Did 7hours 40 (on my clock) but ride time was 7hours 14mins, not bad considering.

The fitness of most of the riders was astonishing, one group passed mein excess of 40mph towards Hawes..they were keeping up with the motorbikes!

I was amazed by the fitness of the riders too. I spent all day being passed by rider after rider. Think I only managed to pass two or three riders all day. However, for me it is all about getting round. These routes and distances are much harder than my normal rides are are always a real challenge. Bring on the WRC, only 35 miles and 1500m more climbing than yesterday (.. starts to feel sick at the thought....).
