It is indeed saturday 16th June and currently I have 750 entries for the three rides. I have extended the closing date until tuesday 29th may and hopefully there will be a few more late entries. However don't delay if you are going to enter as I need time to ensure the logistics for the whole weekend run smoothly.

    Sorry, Peter!

Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety

  • I'm doing it, and to be honest, I'm terrified. I'm a mtb'er not a roadie, and it's my first big group road ride.

Tell me that it won't be too hilly, please

  • Its hilly, but manageable. The ryals are great fun, steep but not too long, but they come towards the end, so save a little! They seem to spring out of now where!

    Enjoy its a beatiful ride.

Does anyne know if there is a hill profile or a Google Earth route available for this thing? I want to see how it compares hill-wise to the Etape du Dales and the White Rose.

    Thanks.

Sorry I was not able to create route profiles for the event this year-it will be done for next year -promise. I am not sure which ride you are refering to as there are three rides. Both rides B (62ml) and C (10ml) are tough rides but as a previous poster said - doable. Using the experience I have on the rides I have created plus the knowledge I have of the roads that make up both the Etape and the White Rose I would say the 100ml ride is as tough as the Etape. One of the Gosforth RC club guys did the etape in 6hrs 40mins and he has also pre ridden the 100 cyclone and it took him 6hrs 45 mins.
hope this is of some help

    Paul,
if you fancy doing the 100ml and 31ml for me and e mailing profile to me as a jpeg I will get put onto the website and I will certainly buy you a couple of drinks that weekend. You will recognise me as the madman shouting at everyone and looking constantly worried!
    cheers

  • I'll do my best for you peter, I struggled with that one ever so slightly as the route map isn't the best, but I'll see what I can do

  • A quick report on this excellent event...

I rode the 100 mile route while my girlfriend tackled the short version. We were both highly impressed with everything about this event - the organisation, signage, timing system, feed stops and most importantly of all, the actual routes. We have already pencilled it into our diaries for next year and would recommend it to everyone.

Also, thanks to Peter Harrison and his team for their fantastic efforts in putting on the whole weekend.

I would just like to second what Filter King has just said. I did the 100 miler too, fantastic route.

Well done Peter Harrison and all the helpers, Excellent event, very well organised, signposting first class.... and remarkably, the weather was excellent too.

    I'll be there next year

Totally agree, a very well organised event which will hopefully be running for many years to come. Even the weather held off for the day which was great to see after what we've been suffering over the last week or so. The one thing that I think could slightly be improved upon was the distance between the feeding stations on the 100 miler. I was pushing pretty hard as I was trying to get a sub 5:30 time and was to the point of total burnout just before Stamfordham. I supose that I'll make sure next time that I carry more reserves before I start.

For those who are interested the final time sheets are up on the official website. Does anyone know when exactly the photos are due to be posted.

Finally thanks again Peter for organising a great event.

I was aiming for under 6.00, but ended up near 6.30 because of the worst cramps I have ever had. This was probably, in retrospect due to my pre-sportive week consisting of no cycling at all, and getting more drunk than I can ever remember (i'm not really a drinker at all normally) in London after a champagne reception at a conference at which I was speaking, and not remembering how I got back to the hotel. Not good.

Anyway, I was flying until half way around and heading for 5.30 - someone even remarked that I was climbing like Pantani - and then suddenly both legs started to feel like someone was shoving stakes up them everytime I put any pressure on at all... if I had any sense I would have packed in, but I don't do that, so I crawled on (almost literally by the time I got to the Ryals), dropped by everyone I was with until I stopped at Stamfordham for a few minutes, and recovered enough to get back to Newcastle fairly quickly.

Memo to self: massive binges and sportives do not mix!

But, a really well-organised event and an excellent weekend all round - just a shame about the weather for the Crits on Friday night...
