Iv'e just returned from Paul Hewitts bike shop in Leyland after having my Paul Hewitt Inverno serviced and checked over after having done about 3k miles since I bought it.

Once again full marks to Paul, Gethin, Andy and the staff for getting it sorted, every little detail was not overlooked (rubber donut rings on the cables and cable ends replaced)

I was even treated to a look round the frame workshop -

    Thanks Paul and staff

its really nice to read a thread commenting on GOOD service and customer care.

in many ways it's the best sort of advertising, certainly from now on, hewitt's shop will be at the front of my bike shopping destinations.

  • I've just picked up my brand new Condor Fratello from Paul Hewitts. New frame and forks but old stuff from my 2nd bike. Once again though I couldnt resist having a set of wheels off him and so I've treated her to a set of record/dt swiss/open pro built lovingly by Paul himself.

Not ridden her yet but I'm sure if there are any problems then the fit won't be one of them and whatever does cause a problem will be sorted fast.

    Once again superb service.

Only problem is that everytime I go in the shop I get that little bit closer to ordering a Cervelo R3!!

  • Ken, I mean "her" as in the new bike. Sad, I know.

I don't know the exact amount of the wheels because I got the lot done as a bundle. I probably could have got it all done cheaper elsewhere but after seeing the amount of care and attention Paul puts into building a bike I think the extra is worth it.

I've had my bottecchia (which was built by Paul) a few months now and it's not needed any attention. Thats the first time I've had a bike built not had it back to the shop within the first month.

I have just collected a Cheviot SE and one of his Alpine Bikes from the great man. Everything said in the above posts I can totally endorse. Sound advice, professional service, beautifully built bikes that fit superbly, huge attention to detail, not one single penny begrudged by me as the purchaser (how often have you ever genuinely felt that?!). It is so worth the effort of getting there, they are quite literally minutes from the M6. GO!

    I'm on my way!

Making the long trip from Sussex to get measured up and fitted for a new frame. Doing something similar to sparrowlegs - new frame and wheels, rest of the kit off of my current bike.

I'm so looking forward to getting a new bike!

Took delivery last week of Centaur hubs, 32 hole black open pros with GP 4000. Transformed feel of my bike for the better.

Great service all round, even down to the vanilla crisp power bars he sold me!

I bought a Cheviot about 2 years ago and it rode like the proverbial dream straight from the off-well worth travelling up from Snowdonia for. In fact I'm thinking of buying an Aravis SL as well, so they can get together and have little baby Hewitts (aaahhhh....)....LOL.If only all bike shops were like this!

I've now been there, done that and bought the frame - and a pair of wheels for good measure!

What a fantastic place. I must have been there best part of three hours being fitted to the jig, with the settings used as a basis for a touring frame to be built, then deciding on colour, fittings, braze-ons etc.

The fitting process was compounded by my choice to use very non-standard cranks and Paul was so professional, helpful and patient with my particular requirements that I am confident the 520 mile round trip will have been worth every penny. Just got to wait a few long weeks now...

I would like to echo all the positive comments on this forum regarding Paul Hewitt.

As a relative novice to cycling I have often felt 'uncomfortable' in my local cycling shops. As a direct result of what I read here, I travelled across to his shop in order to have a frame that I bought built up by him.

The first impression one gets is that you are dealing with a professional. He talks complete sense and has a no nonsense approach, based on his vast experience of dealing with cyclists from every level and background.

While I was there (for over two hours), I couldn't help but notice that he and his staff always have time for people. His customer service IS second to none.

I would urge anyone who feels intimidated by their local bike shop, needs a new bike, a fitting etc to pay a visit to Paul Hewitt and his staff. You will not be dissappointed.

Following my own experiences I can't praise or recommend him highly enough.

Without wishing to over-egg the pudding I too can only offer praise for Paul Hewitt's no-nonsense professionalism. Travelling across the Pennines from Scarborough for a fitting for my Giant OCR Zero was a worthwhile trip as I now have a bike that fits!

What a revelation - the difference between the "received wisdom" method of bike set-up gleaned from books and info from my LBS was way out, with both reach and saddle stem too short, these being the main reasons for my lower back pain and even with a slightly too small frame size (LBS to blame again) with Paul's help I now have a bike that, at last, feels right.

I know where I'll be going when it's time for a new bike! :D

I couldn't have put it better.
My bike set up is completely different to how I had got it after reading numerous books and articles on bike set up. I thought I needed shorter stem and lower saddle and I came away with the opposite. I had a quick run up the road on the bike and the difference was amazing.
While my bike was clamped up, he started moving through the gears, making small adjustments, lubing the chain etc etc. I also got brand new white bar tape, which makes my bike look a bit special. I was there for a couple of hours with my baby, who the staff kindly entertained while I went out to test the bike.
    Just brilliant.
The shop itself is full of the most fantastic bikes - stuff to make you drool. Me and my husband will definitely be travelling up the M6 when we upgrade our bikes.
  • I recently visited Paul Hewitt cycles after years of never having a frame that fits correctly. I was measured for the frame and advised on all aspects of the specification according to what I had planned and was looking to achieve.

I am pleased to say that for the first time ever I have a frame that not only fits but fits like a glove. The wheels which were handbuilt by Paul Hewitt are exceptional and all of the specification was advised correctly. The price I feel was a bargain for the service and product I received.

    What a CUSHTY service.

    regards,

    Cushty.

I just want to echo all the positive comments re Hewitt cycles. I had a custom built bike from Paul a number of years ago, and have never regretted my purchase. The fitting was very thorough, and the end result is a bike which I look forward to riding every time I go out.
I've just been down to have a new set of forks fitted, and while I was there I mentioned a couple of problems I was having, one with noisy spokes on a rear wheel, and the other with my front derailleur. Despite being busy, Paul gave all the jobs his full attention and loads of time. As always I left the shop as a very satisfied customer.
If there's a better bike shop, I've yet to find it!

How much more expensive is he than other bike shops? For example how to his prices compare to Evans?

I'm looking for a new bike, live in Lancs, but only want to spend about a grand (twelve hundred max.) What would I get from them?

I train quite a bit and tend to do 3 hour rides, I'm looking to join a club, racing does interest me and I've got what would become my winter bike (Trek 1000).

    Any advice welcome.

  • There is no doubt you can buy complete off the peg bikes from the bike chains Evans, on the internet from Wiggle at significantly discounted prices. Which can be pretty tempting if you are on a budget and keen to get the best value.

However, I have learnt from experience, having been in your situation about two years ago, that is vital to get yourself measured up for the correct size frame, stem , bars, crank length etc I was riding around for two years ignorant of the fact I was riding bikes that were too small for me. No wonder I had niggles with my back and knees.

For £1200, I am absolutely postive that Paul Hewitt will put you on his jig and build up an excellent bike bike tailormade to fit YOU and what YOU want to do with it race, sportives etc I am sure you will be extremely happy with it and will not regret paying a bit extra compared to prices elsewhere. It will not be some generic discounted model that may be the wrong size for you. BTW he also builds superb wheels.

From my own experience I know that the individual service you will receive in his shop is better than anything you may get in a bike supermarket. Take my advice go and see what he can do for you.

I shudder when hearing a comparison between an outfit such as Evans and a proper LBS like Hewitt Cycles. There is no comparison! :)
  • I bought a bike from Paul Hewitt just over a month ago, after trawling the internet for a bargain. I did nor regret my choice; I have never been 'measured' for a bike before, and have never been has comfortable on a bike either! Unfortunately my Carbon pride and joy is back with Paul after a nice Hit & Run motorist clipped my back wheel! But at least I know it will come back to me like new:-)
  • After reading all this praise about Hewitt Cycles I thought I’d drive there and see about buying my first road bike… never again!

I hate driving on motorways (full of bad drivers) and was already stressed has I left the motorway at Leyland. Then spent 20 – 30 minutes trying to navigate the town from hell, where every road to where I think the shop is appears to be closed. Tried asking for directions, but unfortunately chose to ask the local village inbreed numpty, who didn’t appear to understand the words ‘bicycle’ and ‘shop’. Finally get on the right road but can’t find a parking spot anywhere (bright double yellow lines everywhere), by which time I’m so stressed out I decided it was a wasted journey and headed back home via A roads.

Ha ha and this is Paul Hewitt's fault if you don't know where you are going?

Have you been driving for about a month or something? Dear oh dear!

Yes - unfortunately there are road works around Leyland at the moment, but they don't make Paul Hewitts bike shop inaccessible - approaching Leyland from the other direction the next Junction North on the M6 and the sign says Business's Open as Usual.

I was in the shop last week for an estimate and was dealt with in the most civil manner as were other callers on the telephone during my visit.

So PETER 216 be a bit more patient and give the shop another try, you don't know what your'e missing.
  • Just to add, it took us 5 hours to get to Paul's on Saturday, including a 1 hr go slow for sheer incompetent road works on the M6, we too found the road works in Leyland but we'd printed off a map so found another route.
We park on the street to the left of the shop (immediately after it) no yellow lines at all.
can't believe you got to the shop and didn't go in

Should also add that for the second time in 4 months the service Paul gave was superb, he's fitting my wife for a bike she can ride with an arm injury.

The 9 hour car ride was more than worth it for the pleasure we will get from going out for pain free (her arm, my ears) ride again.
  • Hi all,
Went back to Pauls last week to collect my bike after some modifications (had some bling hubs exchanged for something more durable) and incredibly the man gave me £150 back!!! and that was after rebuilding both wheels, once again first class service,as got to be the best bike shop in the UK in my opinion.

Good grief that is amazing service! I can't think of any other LBS you would find that level of customer satisfaction.
  • having had my new bike for 4 months and tried various posisionings of seat am still getting a lot of lower back ace usually after about 20-30 miles have booked in with Paul Hewitt, having heard so much praise for the guy.So roll on a week today.
  • Hi Frank,
So how did you get on at Pauls? i hope your back ache is sorted,i would be very surprised indeed if Pauls fitting session hasnt improved things!
