Re: Raleigh Suspension

The fork on your Raleigh really is not very good. It doesn't have a damper at all, just a very crude spring. I'm afraid it'll never really work properly. It'll take some big old bumps to get that thing moving. The crude seals and bushes mean it has to overcome a lot of friction before it'll move. My...

Re: Specialized Camber vs Cannondale Habit vs Trek Fuel

Some love Treks rear suspension and technically it's excellent but if like me and the two above, you don't like it then it feels awful.

Re: E-Bikes, what do we think?

Pro riders get paid very little no matter what they're riding unless they're winning international races so I don't think it's about money. It's always about the money. Whether it is paid in cash, or free bikes and kit, it's the money. Riders like Sam Pilgrim and Chris Smith have lots of spo...

Re: Doubles?

Plastic ramps aren't great for learning to ride dirt doubles. They're such a shallow angle that you'll never be able to learn the correct technique. You can't boost something that small which is what you need to be doing to get over gaps.

Re: Specialized Camber vs Cannondale Habit vs Trek Fuel

Don't buy a Trek without a test ride. Some people love their rear suspension, others find it awful. It's a bit of a personal preference thing.

Re: E-Bikes, what do we think?

It looks like two of the UK's top freeriders have moved on to e bikes. Chris Smith is riding for Cannondale, promoting their e bike and Sam Pilgrim is riding for Haibike. I'm guessing the manufacturers want riders with a younger following but I'm not sure how their riding will translate as both spen...

Follow someone in to it. If you bottle it, try again and keep going at it.

Re: Upgrading from 2005 Giant Trance 4

It'll be a good upgrade. Modern geometry means more stable over rough ground, stiffer fork will make it easier to hold a line, better rear suspension design means better pedal efficiency and better performance over rough ground. The modern Anthem is closer to the 2005 Trance but even that will be a ...

Re: Bike Mechanic- Wages??

A car mechanic needs to understand various types of engine, electrical systems, chassis and drive train. My car is going in tomorrow for a supercharger rebuild which is a two day job involving complex gear systems, mini clutches, shock absorbing drive couplers, bearings and electrics. The same mecha...

Another solution to a problem that doesn't exist.
Also, titanium is a terrible material for a spanner. It's expensive and brittle and not hard enough.

Re: Off-road in the snow,?

Snow is wicked fun for riding as long as the ground underneath is frozen. Grip is either immense or none existent and goes from one extreme to the other without any warning.
I broke my collar bone last time I rode in snow but still had a great day.

Any Shimano brake is a big step up from old Jucy's. I'd go for Deores, I got a pair for £70 and they are absolutely brilliant. Not just good for the money but a great brake.

Re: Full Suspension Ebike Riders, Come In For A Chat :-)

Look up Chris Smith on Facebook. He's just started riding for Cannondale and has one of their ebikes. There are a few videos which show what it's capable of. I think they're getting him to promote the ebike more than the enduro bike at the moment. https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=10159737...

Re: MTB Drivetrain Design Project

Done. The derailleur is the worst thing on modern mountain bikes. Replacing it with something like a lightweight gearbox would be the best development since disc brakes.
Current gearboxes are a bit heavy, expensive and need a complex chain line to work with a non single pivot rear suspension.

To be honest I wouldn't have either.
The Bird Aeris 145 is much better value and a better bike at this price.

Re: XC Mountain bike

Road fit and MTB fit are two very different things. It's fit out of the saddle which really matters for bike control.. Bike fit just doesn't work for MTB. It'll be a case of buy the best fit you can find and then tweak to suit after riding. Those are all quite racey xc bikes, not not very forgiving ...
