Re: Who would you like to see back in the sport?

Would be interesting to see Boardman back now competing in a supposedly cleaner sport. Always regarded him as likely to be a clean rider in a dirty peloton, and would be interesting to see what he could do on a more level playing field, think he would have been and ideal fit for Sky/Ineos. Ditto fo...

Re: Best area UK for recreational cycling?

From my response to a similar thread about the best options for a UK based cycling holiday (albeit the OP on that wanted something with shopping nearby): I'd go for mid Wales. Loads of really quiet country roads and superb climbs that don't feature in any of Simon Warren's books so a bit quieter (al...

Re: Carbon Climate - activist

I read somewhere that the biggest impact you can have if you are trying to slow global warming is to have less kids. I only have one and am too old to be having any more, which more than offsets any car or holiday related activities and the odd lump of steak. However some of you millennials should ...

That Jumbo team is ridiculously strong if the Tour riders aren't knackered.

Re: Who would you like to see back in the sport?

Becky James back in the track squad ahead of Tokyo. Retired far too early and 2020 with injuries behind her could have been her games. I haven't watched much track cycling lately but the squad feels a bit lacking on the sprint side in particular and could do with her experience. Was going to say Bel...

Re: Seemingly trivial things that annoy you

Drinks being served in a glass with another drink name on it e.g. hotel bar just served my bottled ale in a Greene King IPA glass and the wife had an orange juice and lemonade served in a Guinness glass. Really, really trivial but annoying all the same.

Surprised you haven't heard of SKINS before. Jamie Fuller is a self-styled crusader for ethics in sport and set up Change Cycling Now. He probably claims credit for bringing down McQuaid! Just stumbled upon this little nugget, Skins filed for bankruptcy in January... https://watercooler.skins.net/2...

Re: Richie Porte... is he finished?

Lance Armstrong over on his podcast doesn't rate him either but is adamant that Porte could be Ironman Champion. I presume that Porte does triathlon as well. But didn't he actually re-invent himself as a week -race contender? He seems to lack the fire of eg Nibali or Froome but as #2 at Sky in thos...

Re: Should Mark Cavendish swallow his pride and retire?

For whose benefit would his retirement be? Yours because you don't like it when he doesn't win? As long as he wants to carry on riding and someone is willing to give him a contract, good luck to him. And your point about Viviani implying he was past it which is why he is moving down a grade by goin...

Re: Richie Porte... is he finished?

Love Porte but never quite been the same since his 2017 Tour crash. Would love to see him win big at some point but at 34 I doubt it. Would need an amazing team around him to achieve that and he doesn't have that at Trek. So should he retire? Is he a sad joke or is he still a good rider with a poor...

Christ he looks about 17, which is the age of most of my football team, I know he's 22 but his whole life ahead of him. Cycling is pretty much the best thing I know outside of having kids and family but at times like this it's the worst. I was thinking the same, the photos bring it home just how yo...

Re: Should Mark Cavendish swallow his pride and retire?

Sad joke? The guy contracted Epstein Barr Virus and still hasn't recovered. Maybe he'll never make it back to winning ways but I think he's earned the right to decide for himself when to retire or to at least get to a position where a team is no longer prepared to give him that chance.

I'd go for mid Wales. Loads of really quiet country roads and superb climbs that don't feature in any of Simon Warren's books so a bit quieter (although there's also the Bwlch y Groes and Devil's Staircase if you want some classics). I reckon it's the hidden jewel of cycling in the UK. The area is l...

Re: Want to go faster uphill? Ride single speed

I used to go uphill much faster when my lowest gear was 42x21 rather than my current 39x28 so there's obviously something in this grinding up in a high gear theory (I was on a relatively heavy antique 1990s steel frame then). We'll ignore that I'm 20kg heavier, 25 years older and don't cycle much an...

I'm struggling to work out if he really doesn't see that the El Passo gunman may well have picked up on his anti-Mexican immigrant rhetoric or that he sees it and even he has the common sense to try to distance himself.

In other news I think Rochelle Gilmore has overdone the Botox. Her face doesn't move anymore. Come on, criticise her insight and even her annoyingly grating voice but her looks or appearance shouldn't come into it. I don't like her as a pundit / commentator though. Re: Re: S*** small race thread 2019

Odd crash. The Bora guy went down near the front middle of the peloton and seemed to miraculously avoid getting hit by anyone else for what seemed an age then just as it seemed the rest were going to survive the pile up started.
